Hmmm, I think it's a bad idea for teachers and students to be facebook friends, but it seems even more dumb to make it illegal.

I agree with both statements. I never accepted a facebook friend request from any of the kids I coached in swimming until they had made it off to college.

I pretty much do the same thing. I won't accept a request from someone that I put in the Navy, until after they graduate bootcamp.

Yep. Common sense says it's a bad idea to be friends with a student, we shouldn't need a law for it.

I think that if she is 18 and has a great body, you make her your friend on facebook.

I know a few teachers who dont use their last name on facebook so kids dont try to friend them, or stalk them. they may use their middle name, or their mom's maiden name and such.

First and Middle is the one I see the most from my teacher friends.

As a student, why would ya want to have teachers as your friends on facebook? Why would you wanna open yourself up for the adults to know what you are doing?

I guess the culture has changed.

Back in the day when I went to HS you didnt really care to have any contact with a teacher outside of school. If you saw them out in public ya may say hi to them, but if ya saw them we would make sure to straighten up and no do anything they wouldnt approve of....wouldnt cuss, or anything like that. It was almost like you were still in the classroom is how we always acted. Hell..I still call a few teachers Mr____and I have been outta school almost 20 years.

If you are a high school teacher and act like you are all grown up and don't post stupid shit on your facebook, why can't you be friends with your students? Now if you are out at the bars drunk on the weekends and flirting with every girl that has a heartbeat then you should not be friends with anyone under 21, nor should you be a teacher. Some high school teachers are only 4-6 years older than their students and actually are friends with them outside of school because of family or sports, should they not be allowed to talk to each other anymore? It is all about respect and common sense when using facebook.

It's completely reversed now. Teachers will "straighten up" now, if they see a student or a student's parent in public. I don't have a lot to worry about because I live 25mins away from my district. However, I've been out with some friends and have actually heard this "****, that's one of my kids' parents/one of my kids...."

Having a prior relationship with a student before the classroom is completely different that starting a relationship with a student after the classroom. That's happened to me recently. I was friends with some parents and had one of their kids in my class. Granted the kid was 8 years old, but I'm not going to pretend like I don't know the kid.

Because they are friends does not mean they are fucking them. I am not saying that you should want your kid going on weekend trips with the teacher but they can be friends.

You said if she was 18 and had a great body that was a reason to friend them. I'm assuming if you just wanted to be friends you wouldn't care if she had a great body.

But if I were a teacher I would think it would be a terrible idea to be facebook friends with a student in my class. People have been fired for stuff they put on facebook, and I would think just to be safe you would not want to cross that line. (Although I think it's ridiculous that someone could be fired for something they did outside of work.)

No. I am friends with some people. They're in their late late 20s/early 30s, and I am 25. They're child is 8 years old and in 3rd grade. Obviously I know the kid outside of school because of the friendship with the parents. My point is that my situation is different; even if I was older and the friends' kid was 17 and a Junior. Now, becoming friends with the student after they have entered the classroom with no pre-existing relationship with someone outside of school (go to the same church, neighbors....) is a different story and wrong.

A friend of mine taught HS English in NW Ohio for 4 years and is currently 26 years old. He recently moved out to the West Coast but friended some of his students on facebook before he left. I don't see a problem with this because they no longer have that teacher-student bond. As long as the kid is in school, I personally don't think it's ok. Teachers who use facebook/twitter as a classroom resource is something I don't agree with either.

I was just being a dick... but didn't feel like using the wink emoticon because the new one is pretty dumb looking.
