I have the title of the article in quotes because it is pretty terrible in my opinion. They act as if the teen stole 7 cents off the old mans table at McDonalds, which is not the case at all.

The teen and friend were identified by the 73 year old man. The teen in question refused to plead guilty and maintained his innocence.

But for the actual robbery, was with a BB gun that looked like a real gun, they knocked down the 73 year old, and punched him in the face. They were trying to rob him of everything he had, he only had 7 cents on him at the time.

What does everyone else think? I think the headline is very misleading.

It should be more along the lines of "Teen gets branded a felon for life for armed robbery".

They got what they deserved no matter if they only got 7 cents! I mean when you rob someone anyway I would think you are gambling and might not get anything from them anyways so whether its 7 cents or 7 hundred they need to get nailed to the wall!

Why is the headline misleading?

Headlines are to get you to read an article.

"Teen gets branded a felon for life for armed robbery" doesn't really do anything for me. But seeing a headline that says a teen is now a felon for only 7 cents; that makes me want to check it out.

Because it's a crap article based on the headlines... while it may have got me to read it once time... when a news source pulls these kind of stunt attention grabbing headlines that put forth facts to twist the story I remember that. I'm less likely to read their stuff in the future knowing it's junk. It might help immediately, but hurts in the long run.

I avoid news sources that frequently use shock and awe headlines the same way I avoid businesses that use incredibly annoying commercials. Just because it brings attention doesn't mean I will come around again.

You honestly think there should be no difference between 7 cents and 7 hundred dollars for theft?

I honestly think that, the crime is the deprivation of one's privacy and property, does it matter if I'm mugged and in one situation my wallet is nearly empty and in another I just got back from the ATM with some C-notes? In both situations I'm being threatened by someone engaging in a criminal act. What difference does it make what is in my wallet? The criminal doesn't know. So why should the punishment be different?

You're held up on two different occasions. Both thieves have what appear to be handguns.

One thief gets 7 cents, because that's all you had on you. The other thief gets $100 bucks because you had it on you at the time.

Should the thief that held you up for 7 cents get off less, just because you didn't have the extra money on you?

When we're talking about somebody committing armed robbery, the issue isn't what/how much they took, it's the actual crime committed.

...

What's the difference in intent in those two scenarios?

It sounds like you believe the punishment should be based on the success level as opposed to the intent and action of the person robbing. Is that correct?

The teen could be dead if he robbed the wrong individual carrying a real weapon.. then the 7 cents would not be a issue

I'm sure if C4F was the judge, they would have gotten the death penalty for breaking the rules.

Interesting about the 7 cents which leads me to this morning. I'm waiting on all of the info but I'm under the impression that some punk ass mother fucker broke into my car, parked in my driveway, and stole less than a dollar out of my cupholder. The rubber insert to the cupholder was lying in the alley.

Now less than a dollar is nothing but this is about the 4th or 5th time I've either had stuff broken into or vandalized since I moved here. My girlfriend even got attacked with a baseball bat in my garage about 4-5 years ago.

I'm about to the point where if I catch the bastards I'm gonna cut off their hand and feed it to them. :p

He probably would have sentenced them to death for using a "bad word" let alone armed robbery.

Theft, there's probably a difference. Armed robbery is a violent crime and the amount of money the victim happened to have been carrying doesn't matter.

Headlines are often misleading to get people to read it. It is messed up, but I bet more people read the article because it said that other than if it was about just a normal armed robbery.

You see it alot, and sometimes it is hard to distinguish if the person writing the article believes said headline or just a way to get people to read.

LIke recently when a headline was a lady getting sentenced to jail because of jaywalking. Well.......it wasnt just jay walking. She took her little kids across 4 lanes of a road and her kid was hit and killed. (I think she ended up gettin probation or whatnot)

place one or two razer blade in your cup holder under the change at night .... it works
Look around the next few days for someone with their hand wrapped up ... potentially so goes the theft
