Exactly, the punishment is for lying, not for getting ink everywhere. That has to be made abundantly clear to him.
Natural defense mechanism kicked in with the kid to try and avoid punishment for the ink. So, he lied and hoped his hail mary would be answered. It wasn't. But, now he's double downed and facing even worse punishment.
Make him paint the door. Take the time to supervise him and make it an insufferable experience for him. And once he's done, make sure he knows it would've been better to come clean from the get-go instead of trying to cover it up. Because, by punishing him now, he'll be sneakier trying to cover up future problems. Which would entail worse punishments.
