An email from my girlfriend when I asked her for details (she is watching news, I'm at work):
Earthquake was in Mineral, VA, approx time 1:40pm. The earthquake was only 3.5 miles deep so that isn't very deep, plus they are reporting the quake to be 5.9 on the scale. As we all know this is a strong quake, especially for the east coast. D.C. is closing buildings to ensure safety and check things out with building structures. News report that the Washington monument may be tilting now. NYC is also evacuating buildings, and only allowing people to pick things up and sending them home. In DC they are warning people NOT to go into the subways as they are afraid of after shocks. Not sure if the same is going for NYC. All flights had been grounded in NYC. Amtrak has not allowed their trains to go over bridges or through tunnels. After shocks are likely, just not sure how many/often/extensive etc since we don't have much experience with earthquakes of this magnitude on the east coast. This is what I have for now.
