He will NOT coach in the Sugar Bowl, and former Colerain Head Coach Kerry Coombs would be the Head Coach for the Sugar Bowl.

I certainly would like to know how the Irish fans feel about this hire or potential hire. Something just doesn't seem right about this guy. If memory serves me correct, two years ago, Michigan stayed away from Brian Kelly. I do not know why but it struck me as a bit odd since he's a good coach. I don't know if there is a "perfect" hire for Notre Dame, but I'm not sure if they are even close if they hire Kelly IMO.

Won't change anything. High power offense with no defense. Sad for ND if this is true.

If true, I believe he'll be in for a real culture shock in quite a few ways.

This is a level he's not come close to, no matter what he said as coach of Cincinnati.

True, but the guy has won ballgames, you can't argue that. He went 12-0 with a schedule similar to ND's with talent NOWHERE close to ND's.

I hate both Notre Dame and Cincinnati, but I think they are hitting a home run. This guy can flat out coach. He has proven it at every level.

WriterBuckeye-I think you could say the same for Jim Tressel prior to his OSU days. I think he has done just fine.

Kelly has won at a higher level than Tressel did before OSU picked him.

The guy has won at every stop. He needs to sharpen up the defense but he is a very good coach.

wow, this guy is killing me.... I know the goal in coaching is to continue to move up and up and up, but this is getting rediculous.... what if Notre Dame ends up the shitter and Michigan or somewhere else opens up? is he going to jump then?

And Kerry Coombs as the coach for the bowl game? You've got to be kidding me..... I know the guy has been successful in HS ranks, but is he ready for the Sugar Bowl against an offense like Florida's?

If ND ends up in the shitter, Kelly won't be offered the UM job.

This is his last stop for a long time if he wins. This is a chance for him to prove that he can take a tradition based football program back to what it once was. If he fails then his coaching stock drops.

How is it getting ridiculous? Sounds like the route most coaches take. Take Urban Meyer for example, turns around BG, the out to Utah, and settles at Florida. Kelly went from D2, to Central Michigan (BG equivalent), then to Cincinnati (Utah equivalent). Like it or not Cincinnati is only a few years removed from mid-major level, and a school that at the moment does not have the respect or control to win a National Championship. To leave for ND would be a no brainier, win all your games and you are in the National Championship, not to mention probably a 3 million dollar per year increase in salary.

They wouldnt of started in the top 5 in the polls hence they wouldnt of had a chance to bump Texas or Alabama from the top 2 spots.
Not necessarily....we can;t say that ND wouldn't have jumped Texas in the polls at some point, especially "if" they beat somebody like USC very badly. Meanwhile Texas was playing creampuff a&m.

I don't really wanna play "what if" but to say Texas for sure would have gotten in over an undefeated ND is stretching it a bit.

This is how coaches do it. They move up from school to school. Take Thad Matta for example. From Butler to Xavier and now Ohio State. I see absolutely nothing wrong with a coach moving up if they handle it correctly. From everything I've heard, he has been handling it quite well.

I've said it before and I'll say it again......

Brian Kelly is one helluva consolation prize.

Now please don't get it twisted.....no return to glory talk here, no savior stuff, no ND is back mumbo jumbo. I just think that they've made the best coaching hire that they've made since Holtz. I think they got it right and I sure as hell hope that turns out to be true. I'm guessing that they made one last play for Meyer and a strong push for Stoops, both of which would've been great hires, but I'll take a Brian Kelly as a third choice in a heartbeat. He's a proven college head coach. That's enough for me for now.

JT was an assistant coach at Ohio State, so I think he had a pretty good idea what he was getting himself into. But your point is valid.

On the other hand, JT also had to deal with different admissions standards in the same way Kelly is going to have to if he gets the ND job. Only much more stringent (if ND folks are to be believed).

He's not used to coaching at a place where he can't simply bring in any athlete he wants. Unless he got some waiver from N. Dame that Urban couldn't even get, he's going to have to make a big change in his recruiting practices.

I have heard from a very big UCATS donor that ND will only hire Kelly if it is their last resort! He appearantly has too many character issues for the ND elite to look over! Now he would not elaborate on this other than to say that one of them was that he was pro-abortion, but he said there was plenty others as well. Appearantly that really matters to the board at ND.

I was thinking the same thing. I mean let's not get it from somebody connected to Notre Dam. Instead let's get it from somebody that is connected to the school he is potentially leaving, and probably doesn't have that much insider info on that school anyways.

I'm not sold. I wouldn't be sold on anyone really. ND needs a lot of help right now.
