You have got to be kidding me. Tressel deserved to be suspended for 5 games. There is a long list of college coaches who have done far worse then not report discounted tattoos to their boss who are still coaching. The fact that we are talking about such a minor infraction for less then a few hundred dollars says a big story. The NCAA rules are ridiculous and impossible to enforce. The SEC colleges are laughing their ass off right now. Don't have a tattoo but my understanding is they are all negotiable to get. The players should be able to sell their personal possessions just like you did when you sold your text books.

If FFT was like me, he BOUGHT his textbooks, if you get them for free from a schollie they aren't yours to sell if you want to maintain eligibility. No more than you can sell your jockstrap to a booster for $10,000. Again, people seem to not understand rule #1, you can't profit from being a student-athlete, if so you're no longer a student-athlete, you're a professional.

What do you propose, most of the money goes to fund other athletic programs. How many programs turn a profit besides men's football, men's basketball and maybe women's basketball at UConn and Tennessee? Answer: none. Are all these athletes going to be paid? How? I still don't understand why these guys need money - they have everything paid for and access to swank jobs in the summer as long as they stay in academic standing and are employable. Guys on my undergrad football team could easily clear $10,000 in the summer working as well as attending summer classes (with free housing to boot). At some point we need to treat these players at adults, it was CODDLING them that got OSU in this mess. Giving them money is like giving an addict crack. It will only exacerbate the problem.

Its not just a convenient rule, its a necessary rule. In no circumstance would I want my child (particularly my daughter) attending a college that paid athletes, there is enough of a divide among athletes and the general student population as it is.

I think there are different arguments here. You're pointing out that the rules may be stupid and exploitative, which may be true. But that's a different question than whether Ohio State/Tressel broke the rules, which they clearly did. The rules are clear. TOSU violated them. They will be (and deserve to be) punished. We shouldn't accept or allow violations of any nature from our state university, just as we shouldn't condone wrongdoing from our public employees, elected and otherwise.

What does this have to do with the price of rice? Invariably, this 'arguement' is used to discredit any arguement to the contrary of the NCAA rules ,rulings , and the dog and pony show that occurs when a someone sniffs a possible violation of the ponderous 400 page NCAA rulebook. Just for the sake of engaging your arguement...there is a little bit of difference between accepting gifts from an agent in the $200,000 plus range and trading memoribilia for a tattoo....just as there is a difference between killing someone while DUI, and a simple speeding ticket. Nothing justifies the amount of time and money that has been used to 'prosecute' Tressel/OSU in the media, by the media. Good people's careers are being ruined and some accountability is in order.....first and foremost is the examination of the NCAA and it's book of rules.
