It will be interesting to see the opinions based on era and genre.

My choice would be Hendrix with Clapton coming in a very close second.

It's all subjective, but in my view:
Robert Johnson
Everyone modeled him.

Then:
Hendrix
Freddie King
BB King
Clapton
Albert King
SRV
Duane Allman
Jimmy Page
Albert Collins

If you are going to pick a Hendrix song, pick Red House, Catfish Blues, Hear my Train a Coming, or Hey Baby (New Rising Sun) all better than Voodoo Child in my view.

Peace in Mississippi would be another to add to that list.

too many good guitar players to narrow it down to one.

im going to mention on that deserves to be mentioned, but probably isn't too popular. Jake Cinninger, dude goes nuts live 200+ shows a year playing everything from bluegrass, metal, and jazz

Eric Clapton - At least he is my favorite, but thats cause he has such a soothing voice to compliment his work.

Robert johnson has to come first - he basically invented blues guitar which gave way to rock and roll. on the more modern and 'known' scale, i'd say hendrix or jimmy page.

Wow, so many great ones! I'll add one; not the greatest, but deserves to be on the list (imho, obviously)
John Mayer

I always liked this show from Cinemax in 1988. Ask Eddie Van Halen, Jeff Beck, Slash, David Gilmour, Stanley Jordan, and many others ...they will tell you the greatest ever is Les Paul

Mayer is good (he has shared the stage with BB and Clapton), but he is not great. I'd put a ton more blues guitarists above him, and Mayer did lift a bunch of his licks from Freddie King.
ccrunner609;755009 wrote:lots of good choices........I think you have to put them in catagories:

Blues: SRV, Johnson, Clapton

Rock: Randy Rhoades, EVH, Hendrix

I really like David Gilmore....he has a unique sound.

Agree on Gilmore.
I'd throw Hendrix more in the blues category, given some of his best work is in the blues genre, but that's me. If you are going to put SRV in blues, then put Hendrix there too, especially since Hendrix really inspired SRV.

One reason why Clapton is up there, the old Otis song:

I've got Hendrix, Clapton and Robert Johnson in that order. I think Led Zeppelin is the boss, but think Page is sloppy live and not a great guitarist.
