putting good defensive/so-so offensive teams in a big ass dome with terrible sightlines is a recipe for disaster for the actual game. since the ncaa has opened up these domes even more in 09 (so that about 3 million people can attend the game - fan experience be damned), these final fours/national championship games have been atrocious. it sucks because these domes are the only thing being considered for the final four and it really makes the games borderline unwatchable

NCAA tournament needs to look at a double elimination tournament once it gets to the Sweet 16.

Had to be the worst NC game I've ever seen. I think I'd rather watch HS D4 JV than a repeat of this game.

And this is why I had that post on the football forums about Single Elimination tournaments not being the answer for sports. All they do is provide for who gets hot at the right time.

I strongly dislike the idea that somehow single elimination tournaments crown the national champion...

Eh that's not true, only this year because there weren't any great teams.

Name the last national champion who at any point during the season was never regarded as one of the top title contenders. I would say besides this year I can't think of any, meaning that this year I would have put OSU, Duke, Kansas as the serious title contenders, with maybe Texas and maybe Pitt (neither team can be considered serious contenders because of their amazing ability to choke in the tourney).

Last 10 champs so you don't have to look it up:

2010 Duke
2009 UNC
2008 Kansas
2007 Florida
2006 Florida
2005 UNC
2004 Uconn
2003 Syracuse
2002 Maryland
2001 Duke

No, they were the better team and proved it throughout the season either by A. being ranked in the top 2 or 3 in the polls, or won their regular season conference title.

None of them had the mediocre regular season the UConn did, therefore, I would argue that NONE of those teams "got hot", but rather were just better than everyone else and proved it during the regular season AND the NCAA tournament.

So again, which previous champion has had such a underwhelming regular season that you can say you never thought they would play for a national championship?

I did believe that without a doubt in previous years, hence my question to you. However, I don't believe that this year. You can't convince me that UConn is better than Kansas, Duke, or OSU.

One and done tournaments do not yield a "Best Team" Champion. The best indicator of a "Best Team" Champion is a series format.

I know I'm coming to this thread late, and I've not read one post, but what a shitty game for the final....what true basketball fan on here (except for the haters, of course) wouldn't have loved to see an OSU-Kansas final? the game last night SUCKED!!!!

But in all seriousness I think the BCS produces a better indicator of the best team than a single elimination tournament in a purely hypothetical situation, but as I firmly believe in the past 10 years the best or one of the best teams has ended up winning it all, except for this year.

Good defense is limiting someone to low-high 30s% shooting, generally speaking.

Pathetic, terrible offense is shooting 18%. I don't give a shit what Brad Stevens said, it was TERRIBLE offense. I repeat emphatically for a 3rd time: TERRIBLE OFFENSE.

LOL--shooting 18.8% the result of great defense? how many points 10 feet in were missed?? don't matter who's playing whom, that's just bad shooting..end of argument

Does Brad Stevens catch as much greif as JT& the Buckeyes for losing back to back NC? I know it is apples to oranges, but still 2 in a row.

There is no doubt that Butler missed some wide open looks,every team does in every game. Butler was 3/30 inside the arc. I think that was mostly due to UCONN'S length and athleticism, which resulted in 10 blocked shots and an intimidation factor that was evident. Andrew Smith was totally intimidated.Alex Oriaki would have had a triple double if he had not gotten in foul trouble.

Butler was 9/33 behind the arc for 27.7%. On the year they shot 35%. They weren't horrible behind the arc given the magnitude of the game, the length of the opponent, specifically Lamb on Mack, and the poor shooting background. Mack(4/11) and Stigall(3/9) were at or above their season's 3-point shooting %. Howard was horrible and I think UCONN was responsible for that. He got very few clean looks from behind the arc and made 1/6.

Prescott, Kentucky had 11 blocks vs OSU but the Bucks still shot in the low 30s%--that's great defense.

UConn had 10 blocks vs Butler but the Bulldogs shot 18%--that's terrible offense.

One player on OSU was 2/16. The rest of OSU's best offensive players;Diebler, Lighty, and Sullinger played at or close to their regular season level.

One team was intimidated, Butler and one team wasn't, OSU.

I think every single one of Andrew Smiths shots that was blocked was a result of atrocious offense. He just turned and shot into the UCONN defenders. Thats bad offense.

It isnt like UCONN was much better. They couldnt inbound the ball, and missed a ton of open looks as well, especially Walker and Lamb from mid to close-range efforts early. But UCONN got hot for a spell and put the game out of reach.
