Ohio State coach Jim Tressel apologizes at first appearance since getting two-game suspension
ASSOCIATED PRESS
CANTON, Ohio — Ohio State coach Jim Tressel apologized to a room full of fans during his first public speaking engagement since being suspended two games and fined for violating NCAA rules.

Speaking to a packed dining room full of 400 fans — many of them clad in the Buckeyes' scarlet and gray colors — at a luncheon sponsored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Tressel began his remarks by saying he couldn't say much about the recent troubles at Ohio State.

He then said, "I sincerely apologize for what we've been through."

Dressed in a charcoal suit and dark red tie, Tressel also apologized for the penalties he and the school are facing and for being a distraction to Ohio State's top-ranked basketball team, which enters this week's NCAA tournament as the No. 1 overall seed.

Tressel received a polite standing ovation the moment he entered the room at Tozzi's on 12th restaurant. He was joined at the luncheon by several former players, including Dustin Fox and Tim Anderson, who played on Ohio State's 2002 national championship team under Tressel.

Last week, Tressel was suspended for the first two games next season and fined $250,000 for failing to notify the school about information he received last April involving two players and questionable activities involving the sale of memorabilia.

The NCAA could levy additional penalties on Tressel, who has been at Ohio State since 2001. Tressel has attended the luncheon since he coached at Youngstown State.

These apologies when they can't really talk are pointless. If your lawyers won't let you say you fucked up just wait until it's over with then give a real one. Not "I sincerely apologize for what we've been through."

with Jim Tressel STILL not having said he is sorry for his alleged "silence", I'm beginning to think more and more that he was covering for someone, especially when I rewatched the presser and when he was asked if he "allerted anyone to this email" , he started to shake his head "yes" before he was cut off by Gene Smith--something just doesn't add up here....

It also doesn't make sense that OSU retracted their suspension for spring ball. They must think the NCAA will be happy enough once they get the details with the 2 games.

Or they could know that the NCAA will add to the suspension so they lightened the self imposed penalty. IMO missing all of spring practice (and recruiting if that was originally included, I don't recall) is much more harsh than missing just game days against Akron and Toledo.

Yea, I don't know how OSU could have went back and forth between the two. One is very severe, while the others is a slap on the wrist.

Without opening the link, and having read the Lantern in my time invested at the university, I assume it's some upstart, young journalism major trying to make a name for themselves...happens all the time. :)

Yeah if his intent was to make a name for himself it worked. I heard the Lantern and that piece mentioned on ESPN today. Don't remember what show though.

Yep, heard about it earlier, really isn't worth the read considering the motive behind it as I was accustomed too anyway.

As far as whether the NCAA coming down harder, I really can't speculate, as I've said I don't know what else there is to it. These couple emails are only what could be shown during an active investigation. There could be info that we're not privy to that pushes things one way or the other.

I think the NCAA is garbage because of how uneven their rulings are. If Dez Bryant missed a whole season for lying about a lunch, then what is actually fair for Tressel? It's a shitload more than Akron, Toledo and a fine, IMO.

Did anyone else watch the OTL from today? There are more emails than what were reported in OSU's self report.

If this is the case than it somewhat makes sense. I have found it hard to believe that all of this was brought on by one email as I miss emails all the time. Also things are not getting better for JT and he needs to come out ans say exactly what happened as there are still many unknowns out there. The NCAA is not going to suspend him all year but I expect it will be longer than 2 games. I am thinking 6 as the players got 5 and he has to be help to a higher standard than they are IMO.

I think we'll start hearing more and more as time passes. No way was everything put out there the other night.

You hope. I mean when it really gets down to it, thats all your stance is. Jealous hatred leading to hoping for the worst.

-Players accepting 3/4 of a million dollars...get a sweet 30/30 and get to blame the University for making money off them..fine
-Players selling their own private fucking property...suspend them for life.

^^^I was thinking the same thing--isn't it interesting that the first two posters to respond to Karen's post were tsun fans :p

again, the more I read about this, listen to various interpretations and rewatch the original presser, I'm becoming more and more convinced that JT's covering for someone here--his lack of a personal apology for his alleged "lone" involvement in all of this screams cover-up--JMO

Uh, ok. Talk about jealousy.

Do you honestly think you know everything there is to know about this investigation from watching that one press conference?

Show me where I said this was fine. If you actually had any substance to your thought, you'd know my stance is not that at all.

Also, forgot a few things there...vacating wins/seasons/championships, taking banners down, no contact with university for 10 years, firing the coach, reduced scholarships, banned from postseason, etc. You make it sound like UM got off with no penalty.
