If the drug trafficking was coupled with the selling of NCAA, or even BigTen, memorabilia, then saying anything in January would have compromised the investigation...the very thing the emasil in January said NOT to do.

Once "they" dismissed the drug trafficking situation, then it appears they could move forward with the selling (or receiving) goods or services, which they did some time in December (around the 18th).

This is what it sounded like to me...is this even REMOTELY close??????

I know it is two different investigations. I'm talking about the fact that Tressel is now a proven liar. And someone said something like "props for addressing it on their own". Well, they didn't really address it on their own. Yahoo was going to expose them so they had to move quickly. There's nothing noble about the way they've handled either situation.

Lies,Lies And More Lies. He was just looking out for the young kids.In the beginning I didn't care what the punishment was but now that he just lied to everyones face and didn't seem to care, I hope they dig up enough dirt on him and the program that they vacate last years wins and send him packing

Tressel receives e-mail in April from an attorney telling him of a drug trafficking case involving the tattoo parlor guy. Some of Tressel's players are mixed up in this because they're selling memorabilia to this guy, but they're NOT involved in the drug trafficking.

In December, the U.S. Attorney General tells OSU that their players were selling their items to the tattoo guy. The TatGate investigation ensues. Tressel knew about the selling of the items but didn't report it because there was an ongoing federal investigation.

In January, OSU, while dealing with the appeals process for TatGate, becomes aware of the information that Tressel witheld and brings in the NCAA to help with the matter.

Yesterday, Yahoo sports leaks the information about OSU/NCAA investigation that began in January. Because of the leak, OSU holds a press conference to address the matter.

OSU isn't just now punishing Tressel because he was outed by Yahoo. They have been dealing with this since January, but some dumbass leaked it to Yahoo.

Tressel is in the wrong, but OSU wasn't trying to cover anything up. They have been working with the NCAA to resolve the matter since they actually became aware of it. Tressel apparently was concerned with disrupting a federal investigation, but he still should have said something.

Does that about cover it? Some of the posts on this thread make me wonder if anyone actually listened to what was said.

I agree. I'm sure there will be more details coming out regarding the situation and we'll find out something close to the truth. And yes, Tress usually has all of his bases covered so I am surprised by how "sloppy" this turned out.

I think it would be wise for all of us "outsiders" to take a wait and see approach. Obviously that same approach didn't turn out too well for Tressel.

Here's the timeline:

April 2010: Tressel gets an email from an attorney regarding a federal drug trafficking investigation that suggests that some of his players were involved with the target of the investigation (the tattoo shop?). The attorney asks for confidentiality due to the ongoing investigation. Maybe it was just a heads up that some of his guys were selling their shit to a place that is being investigated? I don't know, I didn't read the email. Anyway, instead of contacting Ohio State's legal department Tressel decided to keep it confidential. This was his first mistake.

December 2010: Ohio State receives a report from the U.S. attorney that 6 guys sold shit to the tattoo shop. Ohio State immediately takes this to the NCAA and the idiot 5 get suspended for 5 games next year. Tressel neglected to tell anyone about the emais at this point as well. Mistake #2.

January 2011: As Ohio State was preparing their appeal of the idiot 5 suspensions, they discovered that Tressel received those emails in April 2010. They immediately reported this to the NCAA and began investigating this particular violation.

March 2011: Ohio State quickly finished their self report so they could have their press conference after this was leaked to Yahoo sports the night before.

He could very well get more than the 2 games. It all depends on how the NCAA takes to the reasoning he had behind the 2 mistakes he made.

Again, I want to read the emails before making judgement. Based on the press conference, it sounded as though the players could have been in some kind of danger, thus Tressel was concerned about the players safety. On top of that, it was a federal investigation, FEDERAL and he was asked to keep confidentiality. Not making excuses...but if true about the players, and his intent was not to say anything because of their safety...I have no issue with the coach sticking his neck out for the players. Maybe I am way off base here...but thats what I took from the press conference. Again, I want to read emails before passing judgement.
