Does anybody else have a problem with OSU beating up on Wisconsin Sunday then losing their 1st game of the Big Ten tournament?? Having to play 3 straight days, 4 days before the NCAAs sucks and I for one wouldn't be terribly disappointed if they lost Friday or Saturday.

I know it will never happen and Matta would be crucified for doing it, but I would love to see him play his bench in the Big Ten tourn. and let the starters rest.

Am I an idiot or does anybody else feel the same way?

I know they will play to win but will it be a huge disappointment to OSU fans if they lose? If they beat Wisconsin and lose in the 1st round of the B10 tourney they are still a #1 seed.

Worst case scenario.......lose in finals of B10 Tourn. Agree?

Completely disagree.

Losing in the first round would be disappointing as that means they were not playing to their fullest, which would be a bad position to be in just before the tournament starts. Losing in the first round would be worst case scenario in my opinion.

Play to win. They won the tournament in '07 and it worked out for them to get to the title game, where Florida had won the SEC tournament as well. Obviously there have been teams that have gotten bounced early and went on to have tournament success as well, but if it doesn't make a difference why not just try and win?

Doesn't make any difference. With the exception of mid-major conferences with teams vying for invites to March Madness, I think most post-season conference tourneys are BS anyways. Play the regular season and then hit the Big Dance.

Conference tourneys may line the conference pocketbooks a bit more but other than that they serve no useful purpose besides putting key players at risk of injury.

If Ohio State loses in round one of the Big Ten tourney I'm not going to sweat it too much. In fact it'll give the Bucks some much needed rest going into the tourney that really counts.

we play to win, but if we lose (but NOT in the first round), it wouldn't be the worst thing...we beat Wisky, we're a lock for a #1 seed, so that's secure--and a couple of extra days rest wouldn't hurt before our title run

Last year, I wouldn't have been disappointed in an early exit, because it could have given Turner a couple games off.

But this year, I think they play to win and get some momentum going heading into the tournament. And although Matta still has as short bench, I don't think any one guy is asked to do too much.

I wouldn't be to upset of they lost in the semi's. But a lost in first game wouldnt' go over well with me. But there is still something to winning games and keeping the momentum going. I am not sure where I read this, but I remember reading something last year in relation to teams winning conference tournements and how they did in the NCAA. And I dont' believe there was any kind of correlation as far as teams winning conf. tourney, and getting knocked out early in NCAA.
Bottom line, Matta will play to win, just like any other coach in the country will do. I personally think the "tired" thing is way overrated. It only comes up after a loss. People were all over OSU being tired after the Purdue loss. Well, they sure looked fresh last nite. ;)

I'm interested in the correlation between winning the conference championship and winning the national title. Anyone have any stats of the last 10 or so national champions and whether or not they won their conference tourney?

Thanks lotz...I'd say it's pretty damn important to win your conference tourney based off that list. 4 of the last 5, and 6 of 10 overall.

Bored at work so:

2010 Duke: Yes
2009: UNC: No (Duke)
2008: Kansas: Yes
2007: Florida: Yes
2006: Florida: Yes
2005: UNC: No (Duke)
2004: UCONN: Yes
2003: Syracuse: No (Pitt)
2002: Maryland: No (Duke)
2001: Duke: Yes

So most national champions win their conference tourney except the ACC who can't beat Duke lol. The only non-ACC exception is Syracuse in 2003.

Yeah unless you are just completely loaded like the Carolina teams its better to have a lot of momentum heading into the tourney.

2007: Florida----Won SEC Championship
2006: Florida----Won SEC Championship
2005: North Carolina----Lost in ACC Semifinals

9 of the last 13 champions have won their conference tournament, with their other 4 losing in the conference semifinals. So yeah, might as well just try to win as much as you can.

And Michigan State (2000), Connecticut (1999), and Kentucky (1998) before that all won their conference tournament as well. So yeah, just win.

You play to win titles. I cant stand the I think we need rest train of thought. It isnt true, and teams all the time are winning both.

Just looking at those lists, of the teams that lost the conference tourney...how many were in the finals, thus not getting any extra rest anyway?
