OK, so I'm in a Masters program right now, and I have two college loans that were placed in deferment until August, 2012. Both loans were in deferment.

I get correspondence from both companies (Great Lakes and US Dept. of Ed/Direct Loans) that say my payments will resume in March. A little help here... at the turn of the year, do I have to renew my deferments, even though they originally stated that I don't need to start repaying them until August, 2012?

Too bad they don't have a 800 number on that letter that you could call.

Call Great Lakes. They are one of the best companies that I have dealt with.

Usually the loans stay in deferment until you finish school and the school keeps reporting your status to them.

I might be wrong, but I do think the companies are legally obligated to send out those letters. A simple phone call should solve your problem, as they'll probably just confirm that your loans are being deferred.

This is exactly what should happen.

Call the loan companies and talk to them about the situation. You may have to get some sort of paperwork signed saying you are truly enrolled in graduate school.

I got my loans deferred. For some reason they deferred them for 4 years...I am not going to complain about that one AT ALL. I'll be done in April, so if I can get a job, I'll have two years of deferral still. The way things look, I'll be back in graduate school so the 2 additional years will be valuable.

Depending on the type of deferment u have they may want u to pay during the summers...that's how mine were...I usually didn't pay tho...by the time u get a few letters school starts back up and they go into deferment again
