Detroit Mayor Dave Bing's plans for a New Detroit do not include a statue of RoboCop, but that isn't stopping fans of the 1987 film from trying to erect an ode to the fictional cyborg crime fighter.
Robocop gave his body in order to fight crime. Well deserved

There is a big hoopla going on about it up here/there.

Some people feel that the Robocop movie painted the city in a bad light and shouldn't be a "face" of the city. I forget who all someone said, but they said that a "Mount Rushmore" of Detroit with Aretha Franklin, Eminem, Kid Rock, and someone else.

Other people feel that it's acceptable because Milwaukee has the Fonz, Philadelphia has the Rocky, so Detroit should have something too.

I think it's a cool idea, but if the city is painted in a bad light through these movies (I haven't seen them in a LONG time), then maybe there is another fictional character from Detroit that would be better suited.

I was going to say "well, if Philly has a Rocky statue...". But I can see the point about Robocop painting the city in a bad light. Of course, these days things might actually be worse than depicted in the film.

The Rocky statue in Philly is a little bit of a different circumstance. That statue was made specifically for Rocky III and made appearances in the other films. It was just kind of common sense to leave the statue standing somewhere in Philadelphia. It's not like Philadelphia specifically built a Rocky statue.

It's funny, my wife said the same thing.

The even funnier thing is that it's a group of 4-5 guys I think that have been raising the money. They needed to raise $50,000. The biggest contributor was the founder of the real life company that the movie used to "build" Robocop. I didn't read the article, I'm just trying to remember everything that I heard on a morning radio show about the whole thing.
