CEA has demanded that YouTube surrender not only information for Hotz's account where his jailbreak video was posted, but also how many users accessed the video, the usernames of those with access to the video, and all usernames and IP addresses of everyone who posted or published comments to the vid.

Seriously, this is absurd.

I agree, but many have known this kind of thing was coming, and will be more commonplace. It's why I use high-anon, high speed throwaway proxies when I am at home and looking up anythin questionable.

There is nothing questionable about watching a youtube video about a PS3. At all.

This is kinda like all the streaming sports sites they got shut down. The uploader is the one they go after, no those that viewed the content but we all had to know at some point that was coming. This will be interesting to see what the courts decide, it could really change the internet if they allow them to disclose the IP's of users that viewed the video.

High-anon proxies, and those guys will just move their servers to offshore, bullet-proof servers. They'll be able to spin through as many domains as they want.

Linux is an operating system (like Windows, for example). I actually like it a lot, but they don't really market, which is likely why their share is so small.

"High-anon" = "high anonymity"

A proxy is a server (a tower hooked up to the Internet) that you access sites THROUGH. It has its own unique IP address, which can help people locate where the server is.

For example, I live in Akron, but I might connect to a proxy server in China, and then go to a hacker website. If someone wanted to track where I was, they'd trace the IP address that I connected to the site through.

"High-anon" means they won't be able to tell what MY personal IP is. They'll just know the IP address of the server in China. The opposite is "transparent." That would mean that they could figure out what IP address is connecting to THAT server, so I could be tracked.

Let me try a parallel.

Suppose you were trying to score some weed, but you were afraid that the dealer was being pressured by the police to give up names of his buyers. You find someone ELSE to buy for you and they bring it back to you. That person can either turn you in or refuse to do so.

In the parallel, you are the computer, the dealer is the website you're accessing (but are afraid is misusing your IP address/identity), and the person who buys for you is the proxy. If he's weak, and is willing to give you up, he's like a transparent proxy. If he won't/can't, then he's a high-anon proxy. If the cops pressure the dealer to give up his buyers, all he can give them is the proxy.

Linux is an operating system that is free and open source. Meaning that anyone can see or mess with the source files and see how it works, etc.

It has a small marketshare as far as consumers go but has a decent sized server marketshare.

Sony's mascot retweeted a PS3 master key code that he didn't know was one of them. To his 70,000+ followers. Is Sony going to be demanding their information as well? They better file suit against themselves.
