BREAKING: 1 dead, 1 critical, 10 wounded near YSU

Published:10:49, 2/6/11

Police are investigating an early-morning shooting near the Youngstown State University campus that has left one man dead and several others wounded.

Jamail E.Johnson, 25, of Indiana Avenue, was killed early Sunday morning at a party at his Indiana Avenue home. Another person shot at the same time is listed in critical condition.

Capt. Rod Foley, Youngstown police, said an unknown number of people were attending an after hours party at 55 Indiana Avenue that lasted into the early-morning hours Sunday. He said an altercation between those at the party erupted leading to gunfire.

Foley said 12 people were shot during the exchange of gunfire. Ten of those wounded in the shooting are expected to be fully recover.

No arrests have been made, but Foley said police are speaking to witnesses and gathering information on what took place at the party before and during the shooting.

Not surprised coming from Y-Town. Crime has gotten bad there.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the families, though.

Crime has actually remained relatively stagnant in Y-town, so "not surprising" is ill informed.

Too bad though, with so many injured what's surprising is not more were killed.

This is tragic but I didnt know college dudes going to frat parties all carried guns? I'd bet the altercation was between frat dudes and non frat dudes (Thugs).

Yeah, YSU enrollment won't be dropping due to this either. Stupid comment, campus area is safer than most areas surrounding by a long shot. Most Frat houses are a good clip north of campus.

...my sympathy to the family of the young man that was killed and prayers forthose injured.

I'm not quite sure where Indiana Ave is on the North side, but I'm going to guess it probably isn't all that great where this shooting took place.

That is a shame for YSU and the bad press Youngstown already gets. The area isn't terrible, but I wouldn't want to live over there. Whoever said it was safe I'd have to disagree. The whole area around there is sketch.

The campus area is pretty damn safe, not the area where this occurred. I wouldn't set roots where this happened either. It's probably a mile from campus.

Was this at a frat house, or was this at a off-campus private residence?

I know some of the Greeks don't have houses - the members tend to rent in the same neighborhood or apartment complex. One of the house-less sororities at tOSU moved into the Thurber Village complex I where I lived - we moved out two months later as a direct result. Bad, bad experience - but nothing like this. :(

It seems that it's a few fraternity members renting an old home (that is well off of campus).

This is a really sad situation... prayers to all involved.

As others have said the campus area is relatively safe. Now getting into that area depending on which direction you're coming from can be a little sketchy, but for the most part its safe

What he meant was that it was dropping by 1 person.

Be more observant.

Campus area is safe (relatively speaking), however one or two blocks past the dorms is sketch. Which is where this took place. I know someone who lived over there and had a shotgun resting next to the door just in case because of all the crime that goes on.

There won't be a big drop in enrollment. CC just providing more evidence of what a moron he is. I haven't seen the most recent statistics, but as of a few years ago, YSU had the safest campus in Ohio.

This. The campus is nice and safe, but you don't have to venture that far off of campus property before it gets interesting.

It's off of campus in Youngstown, so I would assume SOME do carry, but not a ton.

Nonetheless, lets hope those wounded recover and best wishes to all of the victims.

How can you think it wouldn't affect applications when 12 students just got shot? My parents would have freaked about something like that.

There's a lot of bad things that happen in many college towns. College and university enrollment is not hurting one bit. I would venture to say that there's minimal ramifications that Youngstown State would receive from undergrad applications. Sucks. I hate hearing anything like this bad news.
