So I found out yesterday that my cousin let her daughter get a tattoo.... her daughter is 14. At what age do you think it is appropriate for a kid to get a tattoo?

By the way, I think her lettering her daughter get a tat at 14 is completely ridiculous.

I waited til 26. I wanted one at 18 but I would've got something stupid so I'm glad I waited.

My kids will be waiting until they ar no longer getting financial support from me. My mom had the same rule and it worked out well.

I didn't get mine until 25. I wanted one, or thought I wanted one much earlier, but I waited until I knew what it was I wanted.

I won't let my kids get them while they are under my roof -- this includes college. They can get them when/if they choose to when they are independent.

Over 18 and financially independent. You don't get one until you've paid your way in the world.

Knowing her mom she is probably already is. I guess I was wrong on her age though, she is actually 15 (she is a freshman).

Most of the girls I knew when I was in HS (i.e. under 18) were pretty big sluts that had tattoo's. Not judgemental, just a fact. Now, I think 18 is pretty reasonable, but I DO think in some extenuating circumstances I would give my kid permission to get one before they turned 18. For example, one of MY close female friends got a tattoo when she was 15 because her mother passed away tragically in a car accident and she wanted a very tasteful, small tattoo on her foot that reminded her of her mom. I think something like that is ok. But your normal under-18 teenager, just wanting one to want one, will be a no-go when I have kids. Boys that age always seem to get something really stupid, and it seems like the girls that age that want them are always the big whores. If it's tasteful, possibly. But as a general rule, nobody under 18 should get one.

Speaking of whores, 18 year old Miley just got tattoo number 5. I am guessing she got the other 4 before her 18th birthday.

I recall a story or response on here that made me think there were some justifiable reasons for getting one.

Location and content are serious concerns as a parent when allowing someone under 18 to get one. After 18 you need to employ all your parenting skills to help them make an informed decision. I don't have any, not because of any bias against them, more that I've never felt strongly enough about anything in particular that I felt someone who doesn't know me should wonder about.

My son got a cross with a ribbon listing his older brother's date of birth and his date of death. He wanted the tattoo at age 14 when his brother died, but I made him wait two years to decide if that what what he really wanted. He did, and I felt I did my due.diligence as a parent

If they are honoring a parent, grandparent, sibling, best friend who has passed away, i guess i would be ok with it even if they are only 15-16. Otherwise, no.

I know an 18 year old girl that got one when she was 17 and now she is regretting it. She says she was young and stupid when she got it a year ago. No, Mark Sanchez did not introduce her to me.

When they are not financially relying on their parents, unless the tattoo is for religious reasons and the parents support it.

I have a soon to be niece-inlaw who got one when she was 15; but it was in honor of her father who passed away a few months before.

But I think it's ridiculous for aparent to let their kid get one at 14 just because they want one for looks.

You should have to wait until you're 18 to get one.
