Chimay Blue, Red, White (Blue is my fav.)Commander of Awesome;1184873 wrote:Got any suggestions? I'm not familiar with monk beers that I'm aware of.
Rochefort 10, 8, 6 (10 is the best beer I've had)
Orval
Westmalle
Westvleteren (if you can manage to get any)
those are the 5 off the top of my head, I know there are 2 more. All that I have had are very good.
edit: the other two are Achel and La Trappe

Oldest Brewery started by monks in Germany is Weihenstephaner. The light wheat....IMO....is the better of their beers.BORIStheCrusher;1184923 wrote:Chimay Blue, Red, White (Blue is my fav.)

I was referring to the Trappist breweries, but yes Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbeir is awesome. I'm actually drinking one now.4cards;1184933 wrote:Oldest Brewery started by monks in Germany is Weihenstephaner. The light wheat....IMO....is the better of their beers.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I will keep an eye out for them next time I head to the store. Having Green Flash Rayon Vert right now, a Belgian Pale Ale. Typically I'm not a huge pale ale guy, would rather go IPA route. But this is pretty damn good. Would buy again.

Had a Goose Island Oatmeal Stout last night. I've drank plenty of these before but I've had 3 of them in my "stash" for well over a year. It was a lot more "smokey/roasty" than I remember. The coffee smell was a lot more upfront than I remember also. It could be because of the age, or that I just haven't had it in awhile. Still decent but not my fav.

Just got a note from a contributer to be named later...For now he will remain anonymous...
To which I replied...Sounds great. I agree that the Sam Smith can be a little tasteless. It's more traditional than the others. Us USA Americans tend to push the envelope on beers making them more flavorful. I have yet to find Lagunitas yet. I might have to go to Indiana or Kentucky to find it. The rest of those are very nice.I bought some beers last night: Sam Adams Cream Stout, Victory Strong King, Rogue Chocolate Stout (meant to buy the mocha porter), Samuel Smith Nut Brown, and Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Wild. I also had my buddy pick up a Stone Russian Imperial since they're awesome.
The only one of these i didn't like was the Sam Smith - i thought it was tasteless IMO. Clearly i was in a stout mood last night at the store ha.

I've had it before, thought it was alright. Nothing amazing, but solid. I prefer New Castle if I'm going for a nut brown ale.

I definitely wouldn't buy the Sam Smith Nut Brown again. I agree with the commander, Newcastle is my go to nut brown.
The Victory Storm King Stout was awesome and i definitely recommend the Sam Adams Cream Stout. I'm not a big Sam Adams guy but that beer is really good. I haven't opened the Rogue Chocolate Stout yet but it's probably pretty good, i meant to buy the Mocha Porter though. The beer store i go to also had Trappist Monks and Rochefort 10 so next time I'll pick those up.
Also has anyone had Oskar Blues Ten Fidy? It's from the same brewery as Dales Pale Ale. From what i remember it was one of the worse beers i've ever had but it has unbelievable scores on beer advocate

...I love it as well. Once it sits in the glass for a bit, the taste (IMO) only gets better.BORIStheCrusher;1185053 wrote:I was referring to the Trappist breweries, but yes Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbeir is awesome. I'm actually drinking one now.

Last night, it was a little bit of everything.
Ace of Spades brut with friends to celebrate some job changes. Maker's Mark for an evening drink with a few friends. Chased it with a Rogue Oatmeal Stout.

Any of you ever had any brews by Sixpoint?

Yes - they're really expanding westward from Brooklyn as of late (just broke into the Chicago market in the past year). I've had their Bengali Tiger (IPA), Righteous Ale (Rye), and a couple others I can't remember. Anyhow, it's a very good brewery. Would buy again.killer_ewok;1186578 wrote:Any of you ever had any brews by Sixpoint?

Okay. Thanks. Valley Wine Cellar in Wintersville carries their stuff now and they're having a free beer tasting of their brews today and tomorrow. I will have to try some then if it's that good.

The only thing I hate, not really hate it's more of a complaint, about them is they just name their beers and don't label what style it is leaving you to guess. I've only had the Resin as I assumed it was their IPA, just by the name. It wasn't until I went to their website and it sounds more like a DIPA. I have yet to see their Bengali Tiger which appears to be their normal IPA. I guess I should try more of them.gorocks99;1186580 wrote:Yes - they're really expanding westward from Brooklyn as of late (just broke into the Chicago market in the past year). I grabbed a 4-pack of their Apollo (Pale Wheat Ale), a 4-pack of their Righteous Ale (Rye), a can of their Bengali Tiger (IPA) and Resin (DIPA). Tasted several of them yesterday at VWC and decided to pick some up. Will be having them later today. They came in 16 oz. cans (except for the Resin, it's 11.5 oz.). I think they were $9/4-pack so, reasonably priced.

Having an Apollo now. Very tasty. Kinda reminds me of Great Divide Colette Farmhouse Ale I had a while back. The Apollo is a kristalweizen. How closely related to a saison is that because the taste definitely is reminiscent of the saison beers I've tried.

Basically a Kristalweizen is filtered wheat beer. (Weissbier or Hefeweizen). The Saison aren't real far off from it, but I think it might be some of the ingredients that gives it that Saison taste. Maybe even the strand of yeast used.killer_ewok;1187209 wrote:Having an Apollo now. Very tasty. Kinda reminds me of Great Divide Colette Farmhouse Ale I had a while back. I'm ggetting ready to head to the Pub now. I know they had one of the SixPoints on tap there. I'll try it if they still do have it.

Trying to save some cash so I'm drinking from my stash tonight. Decided to put my bottle of Old Numbskull in the fridge for later, looking forward to trying it.
