Deschutes, Full Sail, Widmer Brothers, and MacTarnahans are the ones I've had from Portland other than Rogue.Mooney44Cards;1309924 wrote:Yeah I've heard some great things about Portland. They really got a head start on the rest of the country with the craft beer scene because they did away with any archaic prohibition laws forbidding brewing/brewpubs before anyone else did. That being said, I can't really name more than like 2-3 nationally known breweries out of Portland. One of which is Rogue which is pretty much found everywhere but not exactly highly regarded for any of their beers. There may indeed be tons of great beer at those tiny brewpubs on every corner but that really only matters if you live in Portland.
Don't get me wrong, I would prefer to live in a world where there was a brewpub on every corner.
Agreed on Deschutes. The rest are meh. Widmer's black IPA is pretty good and their Reserve series is good as well. Their other beers are aggressively mediocre to poor. Also I'm not a Rogue fan.I Wear Pants;1310129 wrote:Deschutes, Full Sail, Widmer Brothers, and MacTarnahans are the ones I've had from Portland other than Rogue.
Deschutes is IMO their best brewery. Some really great beers from them.
Agreed on Widmer as well. Rogue's Dead Guy is a nice stand by but other than that I think they're severely overrated as a brewery.Commander of Awesome;1310134 wrote:Agreed on Deschutes. Thirsty Dog's Christmas ale is arguably better than GL.iclfan2;1310136 wrote:Christmas ale came out in stores today. Got two sixers. They also had out the 12 digs of Christmas from Akron which I've heard good things but didn't buy. Sam Adams also has a white Christmas ale out that looked interesting.
Dead Guy is decent, had some last week. Their Chocolate Stout is good as wellI Wear Pants;1310143 wrote:Agreed on Widmer as well. Rogue's Dead Guy is a nice stand by but other than that I think they're severely overrated as a brewery.

This. Great Lakes has watered down and spiced up their Christmas Ales within the last six years or so, and I have to say, while it might be more forgiving, I don't like the lower alc/vol effect, nor do I like the taste of nutmeg drowning out the subtleties of the ale itself. I think 12 Dogs is a superior Christmas Ale, because you can taste far more of the ale (on which they do a very good job).I Wear Pants;1310144 wrote:Thirsty Dog's Christmas ale is arguably better than GL.
Agree, only Tempest Fugit and Tripel Dog are better from what I have had.Mooney44Cards;1310226 wrote:But I like Lake Erie Monster a hell of a lot more than Christmas Ale.
I'd think if one (in example) lived near three state lines that he would be better off getting beers from those states. But that is what I do.ernest_t_bass;1309866 wrote:Hello? Anyone?

Yeah, LEM was certainly popular, and it's definitely a VERY good Imperial IPA. I kinda wish it wasn't so seasonal.Mooney44Cards;1310226 wrote:While I feel like Christmas Ale is for sure their biggest beer, I feel like Lake Erie Monster is gaining a lot of ground amongst non-craft beer lovers. I read somewhere that it was the best selling craft draft beer of the summer in Ohio. Maybe there were some other caveats to that, I'm not sure.
But I like Lake Erie Monster a hell of a lot more than Christmas Ale.
Go to Indiana to get Boulvard, Three Floyds, Oaken Barrell; Michigan to get the Founder, Bells, Quarry Street, Right Brain, Mackinaw, etc .ernest_t_bass;1310259 wrote:WAT?

I've gotta say, though, that the one beer that I think Great Lakes does just about as well as anybody is the Edmund Fitzgerald, their porter.
I found Lake Erie Monster to be too sweet for my taste. Definitely an unique Imperial IPA ,I can't think of another beer that taste like it.Mooney44Cards;1310226 wrote: But I like Lake Erie Monster a hell of a lot more than Christmas Ale.
Had one of these last night, and liked it a lot. Hoppy and delicious. GI 312 on tap as well made for a good night.ernest_t_bass;1309361 wrote:
Double Trouble from Founders and Maharaja from Avery are two I can think of off the top of my head that are similarly sweet. Maybe Hopslam from Bells too.Commander of Awesome;1310498 wrote:I found Lake Erie Monster to be too sweet for my taste. Maharaja was the first thing I thought of when I read that, too. Double Trouble is sweet, but it has a ton more citrus undertones, I think.Mooney44Cards;1310568 wrote:Double Trouble from Founders and Maharaja from Avery are two I can think of off the top of my head that are similarly sweet.
