Everyone seems to be dismissing the Notre Dame job... everyone I saw on their potential candidates list on ESPN the other night(Fitzgerald, Kelly, Harbaugh, and Ferentz and Stoops) doesn't want it... hmm.... interesting predicament don't you think?

Not really. Most of these coaches if not all are making plans for bowl games or have other things on their agenda that might be more important then letting the media know what their plans are.

I am leaning toward the new coach has already made his decision and those involved have set a date for when they will make this important to some announcement.

Yeah, I get a distinctly different feeling this time versus the last time. You never know what to believe, but my gut tells me one truth was when the ND guy said that the list isn't as extensive as has been reported. No developments, announcements, or otherwise have convinced me that the target was ever anyone other than Stoops and I still believe he's likely to be the guy.

I don't know if last time it was ND pushing the names that fed the perception that they had it in the bag, then got burned, but this time it seems like they've taken a completely different approach and have no intentions of showing their hand until its locked up.

The other thing that IMO is having a big effect on the ND search is five years ago, there were several big time jobs open, not the case now as ND is the only big time job open. I think ND doesn't have to be as expansive on a search this time.........timing is everything.

I find it interesting that Notre Dame would consult with a search firm if it is done deal with Stoops?

I am interested in the rationalizations of this event.

That is funny. The goofy thing is that the next time ND is looking for a coach, all those guys will be mentioned as having "turned ND down" previously.

I'm on record as saying the ND job isn't as great as it used to be (and I still believe that), but it is absolutely meaningless that every jack smack in the country is turning down a non-existent offer.

If I were guessing, it goes back to that whole "feeler" principle (someone mentioned this on another thread). As far as we know, ND doesn't have permission to speak with Stoops, but if "his people" and "their people" get together it's okay.

Hmmmmm, let's see, maybe that search firm does more than just search for candidates?:( I'm sure this firm is conducting extensive background checks and verifying all different kinds of information that goes in to something like this. I'm sure Jack Swarbrick remembers the whole George O'Leary fiasco.

Also, Swarbrick says himself that there's not as many candidates for job as is being reported, which leads me to believe that the firm they hired is doing a hell of alot more than searching.

This is just like last time. And its just like any big job that opens up. The team fans and media think ALL the BIG names want to come in. When in reality, thats not the case. ND will get a fine coach probably, maybe even a big name possibly. But to think all these big time coaches want to come, is ridiculous and not realistic. Its not the job that many want to believe anymore. It happened at OSU when Tress was hired. All these big names floating around. None of it was happening. Most of it is media driven.

I'm sure there are several coaches who want it, We'll see in due time.

I don't think Kelly will be there, maybe Holtz or Harbaugh.

I can see Holtz getting a shot maybe his name will get him there but it will be his ability to coach that keeps him there.

I do not see him getting enough time to correct the problems before he is let go once again putting Notre Dame back where they are now.

I think they will go in a different direction then many want and think.

I do not have a prediction on who they get but I do believe some will say WTF.

This is kind of similar to what happen after Tyrone Willingham got fired. People Forget that Weis was probably like the 5th or 6th option for the Notre Dame Job. But I agree with the others on here. Let’s wait until the season is over to see which one of these coaching candidates are true to their words.

Maybe, but ESPN before the Oregon/OSU game stated that Notre Dame hired a consulting firm to search for a coach.

Holtz really makes it hard on the Notre Dame fans with his blind stupidity when it comes to this team.

I believe you said that first so credit goes to you.

On the other hand Lou still knows his stuff when it comes to most other teams and players.

I wonder if anyone at ESPN has brought this to his attention?
He really does add to the show if he does not speak about "his team'.
