It looks like Hillsdale is pretty much in a "win or go home" position regarding the playoffs.
Smithville could win and still not make it in.
Norwayne is in.

The above situation has heavily influenced my picks for the week. I have given little thought to the WCAL title chase. (I know, not very wise)

Hillsdale over Norwayne- I'm pulling for the Falcons because I want them to make the playoffs and winning is their only chance.
Smithville over Chippewa- Hope the stars align and the Smithies find a way into week 11.

Northwestern & Waynedale also close the season with victories.

regarding the league crown, outright champ or 3 way tie matters little to me since the Huskies aren't in the conversation. I'm going with Hillsdale for the playoff reason.

If things go poorly and Hillsdale loses..........and Smithville doesn't get the required help
that leaves 1 WCAL team in the playoffs, Its been quite awhile since that happened.

When the teams play too tough a non-conference schedule, they bring too few wins into league play, and it hurts the league's playoff shots.

No reason a 9-1 Hillsdale or an 8-2 Smithville team that has wins against a couple teams like Moggy and Norwayne should miss the playoffs.

Unfortunately thats how the system works. It is still a lot better system than most states and a heck of a lot better than the BCS.

Yeah, it's a bummer and a very real possibility.

I think multiple factors (schedules, regional assignments, etc.) have conspired against the WCAL this season. I'm still hoping the perfect storm of completely insane events occur that through some great miracle would land both teams in.

I think the leagues greatest chances of a deep playoff run are with a D5 qualifier.
I'm not writing Norwayne off, I'm just saying I think the D4/R13 road is gonna be tougher sledding.

I absolutely agree. Comparatively speaking, I love the Harbin system. It just sucks the way it plays out sometimes.

Very true, but whoever does make it out of Region 13 is gonna be a female dog to deal with at the State Semis.

A little perspective on the regional placement.

If these two D5 teams were in:

Region 17: 4th and 5th place

Region 18: 5th and 6th place

Region 20: 5th and 6th place

In most cases, they would both AT least control their own destiny. In 20, they might have clinched already.

My best O-Trap impression:

Very true, but you have to take the good with the bad in a tough schedule....I would rather be battled tested and be 7-3 and make a nice playoff run, than 10-0 and lose first round.

I get what you are saying though! :D The bottom feeder teams need to win some games....I don't remember a year when their were 4 teams with less than 2 wins...usually their is one team like that and a couple of .500, sub .500 teams that can give you some points for beating them.

completely agree.....this system works just fine, and let's the kids settle it on the field.

Agree with this too, but the other div. IV regions are pretty loaded as well.

Just look at the map it was the only way to do it and not put Wayne county in the same regions as Youngstown.

A trip to someplace like Portsmouth for a playoff game is nuts! What is that, something like a 3 hour one way trip?

Then again, a week 11 berth would be worth it.

I enjoyed looking at those maps! Region 19 encompasses 25 counties!!! That is going to make for some VERY long travel times in the first round!

I have never seen a post by you that even resembles a Paul post.

But made we should get a sworn affidavit from OQB! LOL

Anyone else remember Smithville playing Hemlock-friggin-Miller in Round 1 of the 2000 playoffs? That ended up being about a two-and-a-half hour drive.

And of course, we were in Region 19!

The following year, it was another two-and-a-half hour trek to Amanda-Clearcreek in Round 1. You guessed it! Region 19!

Clearcreek is in Fairfield county and Miller in Perry county, now look farther south a few ( 3 or 4) counties as 3 of the top 4 could be from Athens county ( Nelsonville York ) and Scioto County way down on the river ( Portsmouth West and Lucasville Valley) both 3 1/2 to 4 hour one way trips. So if a Wayne county teams finishes in the top 8 hope for a Wynford or Grandview matchup in the 1st round.

I drove to Delphos last Saturday night and watched a really good game. I don't care if I have to drive 4 hours if it means watching the Falcons in the post season and we will bring a lot with us!

I don't see what the big deal is. I live in Jackson County and drive 3 hours one way each week to watch Smithville games. Bout time a game could be played down my way :)
