Oh, and if anyone thinks THAT Smithville team would lose to Tuslaw, you are mistaken... must've been some beginning of the season jitters?

I've got to agree with the folks who think the WCAL is down this year. That is mean't to take anything from Norwayne, Hillsdale & Smithville. They are fine teams and I hope they all reach the postseason. However, everybody else is either young, struggling or hopeless. I fear that the bottom 5's inability to "bring some points into conference play" will hurt the other 3 in their quest for week 11. Other than Waynedales victory over Tusky Valley nothing has come from these teams.

Thats basically my opinion on why I think the league is down this year.

Hopefully the WCAL will get multiple teams into the playoffs and do some damage, but first you have to qualify and thats where things look cloudy.



A return to 2005 would be nice, half the league qualified that year. That year everyone won at least 3 games and the overall league record was 44-36 in the regular season.

The penalties hurt Norwayne badly, but the calling was fair and I did not see anything that appeared to be biased by the refs. Norwayne just showed a lack of discipiline which can be corrected. I am sure the Norwayne kids came in with cockiness and expected to take it to the Smithies. The frustration showed and hopefully the lesson will be learned. As Smithville has learned before, play-offs are a diufferent animal than play in your conference.

I agree aboube relieved of yout the kid from Norwayne not getting punished enough but it is happening all over. I remember a suoerstar from Chippewa getting caught cheating on a test and received now punishment. Some people forget that many of life's lessons are taught in a good football program and sometimes you have to do what is right before putting winning at the top of the list. As for Chippewa I am sick and tired of people indicating that they have no talent. They have been on a downhill slide for the last few years but this current coach is the worst coach in a long long time. He has no control over this team, has no idea what he is doing and simply needs to go. If you cannot make one single improvement in two years to a program you should be fired period.

I suspect the Smithies are also better conditioned than the bobcats, forcing them to play minutes that a practice or practices can't mirror. Can't believe I'm saying this, but hats off to the Smithies!! Very few picked you to be in the game. Gotta love the underdog!!

And they have lost some very good coaches (Hanzie years ago in boys basketball, Norman a few years back in girls basketball, Lance has now left in softball) who have tried to instill discipline and win the right way because the double standard seems to work against them with the superstars. I'm just glad the Bulldogs are improving and giving Coach Doty the effort they have been giving to continue to improve....I have no doubts that they will be back at the top in a short time!

To the demorilizer7 yes he is that bad just look at the stats. Out of 121 div 4 teams in ohio we are ranked 121. He is 0-19 so far and we have only scorscoreded 6 offensive TD's vs other teams varsity squads in those games. Since he never takes his varsity out of the game most of our points come against other teams jv squads in the 4th. The play calling is terrible and there are NO fundamentals at all. We have kids fighting with each other a kid caught undage drinking etc., and they are still on the team. No discipline at all or organization in the program. If in two years you see Zero improvement it is time to go.

Problems like that are definitely places where a coach needs to exercise some repercussions.

However, you can have a couple bad years if you take over a program that has allowed that to go on and hasn't taught sound football.

Remember, Coach Schrock was 2-16-2 in his first two seasons as Smithville's head coach. Once he had kids who had spent four years in his system, things began to look up.

Agree to an extent...but Chipps havent been that terrible at lower levels, i know that always dont equal Varsity success...but...I gotta question coaching very much so..

The NUMBERS tell us that the league had a MUCH tougher non-conference schedule this year than they did in 2002 (class of 2003). Heck, the non-conference opponents have more wins through 8 weeks this year than they did through all 10 weeks in 2002.

Now, I'm not saying there isn't a chasm between the top and bottom of the league unlike we've seen in QUITE some time. What I AM saying is that the talent, top to bottom, may not be that different. We may not have a team that could go to the State Championship, but we have three teams I still say could win at least 1 game in the playoffs.

I'm not suggesting that this is the MOST talented year the WCAL has ever had, but I don't think it's a "down" year, either. If you use records, then you have to use non-conference strength of schedule, as those are the games that bring points INTO the conference. Play a tougher schedule weeks 1 - 3? You're going to have a worse record, even if the talent is identical.

Consensus never meant as much to me as numbers, and the numbers say that the WCAL played a B**** of a non-conference schedule this year!

Please don't confuse beast.

Well #9 Wheelersburg lost, so Smithville moves up at least 1 spot.

Just to clarify, the team that lost to Tuslaw in the season opener no longer exists. If the two teams meet again now it is 60-20 Smithville. Remember this team was 2-8 last year, just needed to learn how to win. Will root for Norwayne this week, WCL Tri-Champs sounds just fine to me. Hopefully the Smithies and Falcons somehow both make it to playoffs and try it again, maybe we would have some real officiating and see which team wins!
