My idea of an athlete is someone that can catch a football/baseball, throw a football/baseball, shoot a basketball, and swing a tennis raquet/golf club/baseball bat with some success without any coaching or practice - they just do it. Anyone that can do those things can also jump on a bike and run a few miles. My mom can jump on a bike and run a few miles, but I'll be damned if she can throw a football or shoot a basketball. Sory ccrunner, excercise doesn't qualify as a sport, even if you compete in it.
My vote is for Farve. Sure he used some painkillers, but the man got crushed on a repeated basis, and played a 24 yr old man's game at the age of 40 - that's tough.

I agree. Brett Favre gets my vote.

I'm also not sure that I would consider running a sport

I don't have any names, but I love hearing the stories of the "good ol days" in football when some of those linebackers/linemen played with broken legs and shit like that.

Not everyone is born with a pencil neck and pipe cleaner arms to be able to compete.

Might well be this young lady in 1996.

....needing a near perfect vault for the USA women's gymnastic team to win the team championship in the '96 Olympics...
for herself, her team, her country and for the gold she stuck her landing with a broken ankle. It doesn't get any more clutch or tougher than that.

I'm just giving you shit man, because frankly, you are the type of guy who it's fun to give shit too...but seriously, I'm sure you were a great athlete, but the concensus knows that any great athlete can run and bike, but a great biker cannot jump onto a basketball court or baseball diamond. That's all.
And nobody could jump onto a football field and do it until they were 40 yrs old while constantly getting hit by 275 lb men running at you with the force of a small car. Farve gets my vote, again.

One of the athletic feats for which Youngblood is best known, is that of playing the entire 1979 playoffs, including Super Bowl XIV, with a fractured left fibula.[22] He also played in the 1980 Pro Bowl with the injured leg, a week after the Super Bowl.[23] In the playoffs, Youngblood sacked Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach near the sideline in the waning moments of the divisional playoff game versus the Cowboys.[24] Playing with the fractured leg was noted by Sports Illustrated in their Top 10 list of athletes playing in pain.[25] For that and other achievements Jack was dubbed the “John Wayne of football” by Jim Hanifan and echoed by Hall of Fame coach John Madden.[26] The NFL Network series NFL Top 10 selected Youngblood's performance in the 1979 playoffs as top on its list of the “Gutsiest Performances″ of all-time.

You just made no sense. You said Lance could compete against those with his same experience, yet in the same sentence remark that no baseball player could ever finish the Tour D France. Last i checked, the Tour D France wasn't a ride around the neighborhood, like it would be a for Lance to jump into a baseball game down at the local park.
Take Albert Pujols, throw him on a bike and tell him to race a bunch of weekenders like me - I bet he does pretty well. Take Lance and tell him to hit an 80 mph pitch in the beer league at the local YMCA, i bet he strikes out every time. Adn Pujol sisn't even close to the best Athlete in MLB. That's my argument.

In my opinion, there aren't too many "tough" athletes left. There are guys who sit out for any little reason.

I can honestly only think of two active players that are in this discussion, I know I'm missing some.
