You make a good point but there are some people that do use their hands to lift the toilet seat while touching the shit that is stuck to the bottom.Those same people then finish their business and then exit the bathroom without washing their hands and depositing some of that shit on the door knob for the next person to grab with their bare hands.

I have enjoyed reading this thread and taking in all the opinions. I am actually shocked by the number of posters who say they have never seen anyone use their sleeve or open the door with a paper towel. I have seen it often.

Now a little secret about BRF. If I am in the bathroom by myself, I rarely wash my hands when done. BUT, if there is somebody else in there, I will give a "courtesy" wash for their benefit! Ha ha ha ha!

Let's suppose I'm at home, and as I'm leaving the bathroom I use a paper towel to open the door. Obviously the bathroom door at my house doesn't have nearly the public exposure as restaurant would, but it's still a bathroom doorknob. So I use a paper towel to open the door; I'm feeling pretty good about myself. But then I touch the lightswitch, and I go open the fridge, and the phone rings, and the tv is too loud so I turn it down with the remote, then I open a drawer to get out a fork. Boom. Just recontaminated my hands five different times in under a minute (potentially).
You could have similar circumstances at a restaurant. You open a door with a papertowel but then you touch the handrail, shake someone's hand, touch the back of someone's chair or counter, etc.

Not only that, but what about restrooms that have blowers? A lot of restrooms don't have paper towels - are people taking toilet paper or using their sleeves (ugh, gross) to open doors?

Same. I don't worry about germs too much. I wash my hands often and keep my fingers crossed. I'm sure my phone/laptop have far more germs than a regularly-cleaned public restroom.

If some of you have ever worked in the restaurant's kitchen you would soon realize that the doorknob in the bathroom is the least of your worries.
