OSU/Arkansas received an 8.4 on a Tuesday night. Florida/Cinci received a 8.7 on a weekend, New Year's Day.

This year's Tuesday night BCS game (OSU/Ark) was a 17% rating increase over last year's Tuesday night BCS game.

Not a surprise at all for OSU/Ark to have better numbers.

So wouldn't it be better to compare the game to last year's Orange?

7.2 last year is the number that I found. So in the Tuesday night game slot, this one did significantly better than last year.

IMO OSU/Ark was one of the best bowl matchups on paper coming into the bowl season so it is not surprising to me it got good ratings. Then with everything happening leading up, the story lines created an even better matchup!

Agreed. I think even without the whole suspension/playing the guys discussion it still would have done well. After Jan 1 people were interested to see if the best Big Ten team could save a little face and not be totally dominated.

Also, another interesting tidbit I found: This year's Sun Bowl (the one that sold out in 20 hours!!!!) had roughly an 8 percent decline (3.3) in tv ratings compared to the 2009 Sun Bowl (3.6). It was the Sun Bowl's 4th highest rated game in the past 8 years, behind 09's Stanford/Oklahoma, 03's battle of Minnesota/Oregon, and the 02 match-up of 7-5 Washington vs. 6-6 Purdue.

That is a bit interesting. I would think that a Notre Dame-Miami game would be a popular game. I am beginning to think with the horrible attendance figures and the TV ratings, that Miami is not the draw that the media lets on. They either do not have many fans or fans only come out when they are dominant.

Start time I think had something to do with that. 2 pm wasn't ideal. I didn't even get the chance to watch it as I was busy.

we're also comparing network to cable in this debate. an 8.7 rating on network television is shit whereas an 8.4 rating on cable pretty damn good

So with the ESPN contract we might be looking at how fanbases travel and the average household income as to whether they can afford cable lol.

The game was a snoozer for the casual fan about 7 minutes into the game. People like you probably tuned in for the first few possessions to see Notre Dame get destroyed, that didn't happen, and then the channel was changed.

What? I watched the entire game.

I just think its funny that all we heard prior to the game was how fast it sold out, the best sun bowl in 77 years, etc, then it gets low ratings. Don't shoot the messenger, no reason to be so salty about ratings anyway.

It turned out to not be the best Sun Bowl because Miami fired Shannon and the team clearly didn't want to be playing at all. I'm not salty at all, I don't make any money off of the ratings and I watched the whole game myself. I am curious about your fascination with Notre Dame though. What caused you to watch the game?

If you really must know, which I think is weird, I was at my brother-in-law's for New Year's Eve and he is an ND fan. He also is a regular ND poster here. Satisfied?

Just wondered. I thought it was odd you go out of your way to bash Notre Dame but watched an entire game that they dominated. I am glad that you or your sister married into a smart family. :)

Interesting factoid I heard on the way home, the ratings for the game in the Columbus market was the highest for any market for any game ever aired on ESPN.

I saw that too. Something like 46.2 rating? Dayton was #2 followed by Birmingham.

Really dumb ass where did I imply last years Sugar Bowl got better rating because of the day it was played on?
All I simply said was yes it was on January 1st which was a weekend night last year. But I forgot you know exactly what I was thinking when I wrote that. Keep up the good work dumb ass.

That is interesting and a little surprising with all the games ESPN has aired.
