The question was, "Is Dover football a joke?" The answer is no.
I have us at 7th, my or your list isn't up to date, I think we surpassed Bellaire this year. Either way about 810 of the 820 member high schools in the OHSAA haven't had Dover's success on the field. The only joke here is the question itself.
I seldom post here, but I like reading some of the posts. That said, our party of four had an experience at the Dover - Steubenville playoff game that I'd like to share. I am a Big Red booster and have missed only 1 game since 1962; so, I have been to many stadiums.
On the way out of the stadium, we passed the band section. We must have received at LEAST 2 dozen well wishes for and compliments on Big Red from the cheerleaders, band members, Dover fans, and the band director himself. I have never expierienced anything like that before.
This is something Dover fans are probably used to, but it certainly was refreshing to see such class. I have to say that when leaving our stadium, we have to pass through groups of kids interested only in mass chaos.
On another point, you mentioned the fact that Big Red canceled the series in the ninties; that is not accurate. We were shown the memo from Dover's A.D.. The problem was with a scheduling conflict; the third game never came about. It was never canceled because it was never scheduled. The boosters and the coaching staff really wanted that series.
I believe Shoney's restaurant still has the newspaper artilcle about Dover's Greatest Comeback Win in History. It was framed and hanging on the wall in the back seating area.
Dover: Great tradition with good people and good coaching.
