Michigan State did not schedule Duke, Connecticut, or Washington. So what they really scheduled was South Carolina, Oakland, Syracuse and Texas with a bunch of nobodies. They should be ashamed for making such a bad OOC schedule. :)

Yes and no. While this thread is mean in jest. It is true MSU did not schedule 3 of the 4 "big boys" that they played.

I said this before and no one ever said anything.

Sparty almost always plays a tough OOC schedule. Never will take that away from them, but they don't ALWAYS schedule those games.

Out in Maui they could have played teams like Wichita State, Oklahoma, or Virginia. The Duke game was given to them because of the names of the 2 schools.

Basically the only 2 games this year that mean anything that they actually scheduled as Cuse and Texas, both of which they beat pretty soundly.

Yes they didnt schedule the teams out in Maui.....but they signed up to play in a tourny with other good teams. OSU doesnt even attempt to get into those pre season tournys it seems

And they had a good idea that they would get tested. This argument is lame. Who cares who they scheduled ?? What matters is who they played and they played some very good teams.

I was always under the assuption that those tourney's were by invite. I guess I am wrong? If so then yes I think OSU should try to do that more often. I know they have before and even faired well. If they are by invite then I'd be suprised if OSU is turning down invites.

Scarlet im honestly not too sure how the invites or what not work. But I have a feeling if the OSU AD tried to get into some of these tournies, the people running them would gladly pencil the buckeyes in. Quality team and they travel well

I agree, seem to me that if OSU made it known they would like to play someone would get them in. Also, is there any kind of NCAA rule stating you can only play in them every so many years? I believe that OSU played in one in the beginning of the 08-09 season. (could be wrong about that)

The Maui Invitational tries to get the top team from each of the major conferences. So until Ohio State is considered the Big Ten's top program they can't go to Maui. They're expanding the field to 12 instead of 8 teams next year, with 4 games played on the mainland.

Do you have a source that supports this this. UCONN won the Maui this year and they were considered a middle of the road Big East team going into the tournament.

Is this just who they considered the top program or who wins the conference? Because in my mind you can either say OSU is already there or you'd be of the mindset that as long as Izzo is at MSU they will get top billing.

They all play cupcakes. But some, like MSU, sprinkle the schedule with some legitimate games. Some teams avoid playing true road games.

Sometimes they can't get the top teams that they want. Calipari came out agaisnt the Maui Tournament, saying he's worried about his own team, not how great a field they can get.

That isn't true. You can only go to the same tournament once every four years. So if that were true, even the 4th place Big Ten team in theory would get an invite.

I did. I saw no specific criteria for selecting the field. While most agree that any tournament would like to attract the best field, it appears that your assertion was pulled out of your ass because there is no substantive information to support it.

While I agree that MSU and Washington, and UK are projected to be one of the better teams in their respective leagues, you should agree that the same cannot be said for UCONN, UVA ,and Oklahoma. In fact, these teams, except maybe UCONN, will probably end up near the bottom of their respective conferences.

Check out last years field and tell me where the powers were?

No, Michigan State's last appearance in Maui was 2005. Meaning that 2010 would be 5 years after their last trip there. I promise you its once every four years. Gonzaga went in 2005 as well and returned in 2009.

Teams that have been included in this thing were BYU in 2004, Dayton in 2003, Ball State, Arkansas..its not worth continuing. They for sure don't have a requirement that you have to be the best team from your conference and if you look back from the tournament's start all the back to 1984 you will see this is the case. http://www.mauiinvitational.com/teams/fieldspast.asp
