So I need help deciding on which one to get. I've played with both and both have pros/cons for me. I'm not looking at the Nook color, tho they are nice. Anyone have a nook and can give me some opinions? I like the kindle but I think the buttons seem outdated and I don't like that I'd have to convert epub books I have to .mobi.

I know you said you aren't looking at the Nook Color, but it really is the absolute best. You can root it and make it into a tablet computer and then put the Kindle software on it as well, therefore getting 3 units in one, a Nook, a Kindle and an Android Tablet, all for $249

LJ it is an option. I mean for 100 more the color is amazing. I also like the fact that you can go into any BN store for help, free stuff and tech support.

e-ink >>>>>> LCD for reading books.

We have the new kindle and it is outstanding. I highly recommend it.

I have been researching because my kids bday is coming up. Anyhow, the only downside to e ink is that you can't read in the dark. I think I am going with a kindle even though I am disappointed about no support for epub

That's the only real thing that's keeping me from the kindle and the stupid buttons, but I also think the touch screen on the Nook 1.5 is kinda generic. I know I can format all the books I have using calibre, that's just a PITA tho.

The Amazon brand kindle case with the built in light is pretty sweet. Now you can read it in the dark. Boom.

Isn't one of their selling points that it is "open source"?....I would think that blocking the kindle app would go against everything that the NOOK is about. Is it possible that Amazon would make the app unavailable though?

Why would they? They would still be able to sell books to people using the nook.

Yeah, that is kinda what I am thinking too. It reminds me of these video game systems...they make their money off the software and barely break even on the hardware.

That is an ipad competitor so it wouldn't fall in the same class as the other ebook readers.

Anyone know for a fact that you can put torrent ebooks, epub or mobi on the kindle or nook without any problems?

Yes, I know this for a fact. For the kindle, at least.

Oh, I'm sorry. I thought they all did the same thing. I'm not very hip on the technologies of you young people yet. But, I am trying. Sorry to interrupt, carry on.

Haha, no worries. The tablet you listed will do everything that the nook color can do but is more powerful than the nook. The e-ink ereaders are a completely different class of gadget. They are basically just for reading and playing simple games. The kindle (not sure about the e-ink nook) does allow for basic web browsing.

As much as I like the Nook Color I'm just not sure why anyone would consider it anything other than a ebook reader. I mean when the Android 2.2 comes out you going to play games on it? I doubt it's fast like a tablet. At least I don't know any better.

I am sure that if you go to android central, there is a step by step on how to do it.
