Speaking from personal experience, the Amazon cover for the Kindle with the reading light is PERFECT for reading while laying in a rack. Don't need any other light at all. I got one back in November and absolutely love it.

I have yet to download any books other than the free ones they offer. I've been reading Robin Hood and have a bunch of other classic books that I've never read. I'm looking forward to loading it up with reading material before going on deployment in February. Much much more convenient than having to keep a bunch of books in my rack.

Yeah I'm gonna try that this underway starting in Jan we are gone for 30 days. Tho usually once I hit my rack i'm out. I've tried reading on my phone but I don't last very long. What ship you on?

I got this case for Christmas from my mom. I don't have my kindle with me to test it out yet but I am looking forward to using it.

I've still got the flip-out clip-on light that came with the Snuggie my wife got for herself a few years ago. I'm gonna try that out with the case she bought me.

I usually spend a decent amount of time in my rack reading. I haven't really watched a lot of television or movies the past few underways we've done, and have just spent time reading. I actually have to force myself to sit down and watch a movie at times. Between my typical work day underway and the gym, I just don't end up with a lot of time where I feel like sitting down and watching television.

I'm on the Ronald Reagan. Our op tempo has been utterly ridiculous the past few years. We have by far the highest percentage of underway time of any carrier in the fleet. I've gotten pretty used to 4 hours of sleep a night or so. Which ship are you on?

Yeah I don't like watching tv much or movies and I get real antsy being underway. This will be our longest underway since I've been on the sh ip so I figure I need to read a lot. I'm on the Wayne E Meyer DDG 108. We don't do much underway just our watches and maintenance unless my damn radar breaks and I have to go fix it. So we have a lot of down time underway which I hate. So I'll give this reading thing a try lol.

Color screen = not attractive as an e-reader. (Unless it's a color e-ink display which if I remember correctly aren't going to be possible for consumer devices for a few years still).

Agreed. An LCD sucks for reading for extended periods of time.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if in the next year or three we don't see a Nook Color-esque device or tablet with a Mirasol display. It works well in sunlight and it displays colors and such. I think right now most of the Mirosol displays can do about 15 fps but they think they can get it up to 30 and more which would be fine for video.

The word game on my daughter's kindle is very addicting!

Does anyone elses Kindle freeze up or have any trouble getting it to turn on?
