If you were given the title and content of this story, with no names, location or video, and had to bet $1M on whether the kid was white or black, what would your bet be?
I'd love to play, but I don't need this guy on my ass :p

White people make up about 75% of the population, and committed 58% of the non-lethal violent crimes resulting in arrest in 2008. African-Americans make up about 12.5% of the population, and committed 39% of the non-lethal violent crimes.

Playing the total odds, I would have guessed a white kid to be the one doing this. Playing the per-capita odds, it would have been a black kid and not even close.

But I might be thinking way too much into this :)

Tell me about it. A few years back, I was at a mall in a video game store. I had a brief conversation with a couple of black guys in the same section of the store that I was in and spent the entire time thinking I was going to be bodyslammed any second. It never happened and I was confused. Now I know that something must have really gone wrong. I'm very disappointed...

I would have him arrested for assult if I was the referee.

If you saw these headlines, what would you think? Be honest.

"Gang violence in (insert city)." (Black kids)
"Family lives in trailer and has meth lab." (White folk)
"Lazy man likes to smoke dope and smack hoes." (Black folk)
"CC Runners caught having gay orgy." (White kids)
"Marathon Runner Who Won Race is Skinny." (Ethiopian)

Stereotypes are what they are. It just ended up that CCRunner called a spade a spade. It's not like he came on here (if the video were of a white kid) and he said... "Wow, I figured this kid would be black, but he's not!"

I can see what you mean. White kids tend to suck at basketball on average compared to black kids, so by seeing a headline concerning a basketball player, odds are that he'd be black.

I think you're oversimplifying it. Are you sure they commit 58%/39% of the crimes, or are they convicted of the crimes? Maybe white people have more money so they get better lawyers and have a lower conviction rate. Maybe the police are more likely to arrest someone who is black. Maybe the prosecutor is more likely to convict someone who is black. Maybe more black people live in the city and crime rates are higher there. I don't have the answer, but any idiot can use a couple of stats to prove his point.

Neither committed nor convicted. That is the arrest numbers. And I'm sure that is very oversimplified.

I'm not talking about odds. I'm just talking about what our stereotypical thought systems lead us to assume. Just because assuming something makes us look like idiots, it doesn't stop us from assuming something, based on our own stereotypical thoughts. In my above scenarios, when you read those, you picture something in your head.

Most people picture Jesus and Santa to be white, and with beards. Have you ever actually seen Santa or Jesus? It's the same premise.

Why do you think the arrest numbers are higher per ca pita for black folk? Maybe it's because kids are a product of their environments. Since black folk were in slavery until about 150 years ago, there were Jim Crow laws 50 years ago(Still during the lifetimes of many people), and there is still institutionalized racism today, there seem to be a higher concentration of these folks in areas that are 'less desirable' because they do no have the funds and centuries of wealth behind them that white folks do. Black folks couldn't quite worry about building an empire when they had to worry about their safety.

Not going to disagree, but we can't keep going back to this if we want to move forward. I cannot do a single thing to help the fact that this is what happened in history. I wish I could, but I cannot.

Racism does still exist, but it is not just white-on-black racism. That's the only one that is mainstreamed.

I looked behind me and I don't see centuries of wealth. My family was poor as hell when I was growing up. My mom worked her way through school and didn't get her BS until she was in her 40's. They couldn't afford to pay for my education so I had to work my way through school too. The fact that she valued an education was an important part of my upbringing, but I didn't exactly come from a stellar background. My dad actually sat me down after my freshman year of college and talked to me about why I was wasting so much money on school when I could just get a job now. I think it's BS to try to lump together any one demographic of people without taking into account their individual cases.

And I also think it is BS to keep bringing up slavery. Yes, it happened, but there is nothing that can be done now. Nothing. It's not fair to me (as a white person) to be blamed for it.

It's a terrible thing that happened, but I didn't personally do it.

Of course there are poor white folks as well (who of course were still treated better than ALL black folks), but it still doesn't change the fact that you have opportunities that were made available to your family is white. As to Ernest T Bass, if we just move forward like you propose without actually fixing and addressing the many inequities that still exist, then we will never make strides towards being equal. I would recommend Between Barrack and a Hard Place by Tim Wise for reading. It is an excellent book(written by a white author might I add).

Please tell me you don't actually believe this. We want to cripple an entire race and then one day suddenly declare that everything is equal and everyone has equal rights? We can move on once we rectify the situation, not just by stating that everyone is suddenly equal.

I kinda agree. Plenty of people immigrated after slavery was over. I also doubt all black people descended from slaves. It did have an affect and so does racism. But there have been a lot of people who have struggled.

Look into some of these things and then get back to me about how inequities don't exist. Do some research into redlining for example. Ever wonder why all of these black folks are situated in the 'Ghetto' (Actually a term for a place that is homogeneous of composition. The Hamptons in NY are a ghetto)

How exactly do you rectify the situation? And isn't equal rights the end goal? But yet you wouldn't accept it if declared?

The national deficit is now gone! The White House just declared it. Stating something doesn't make it true.

What do we do to rectify it?
