It's not even the money so much as the years. He is going to be 32 in May, and just landed a 7 year deal. We have seen guys really fall off in their mid-late 30's now that PED's have been outlawed, and the Nationals just disregarded all of that to give a bloated contract bigger than the one Matt Holiday signed last year to a guy who is at best a role player on a good team.
Jason Bay signed for half of that last off season and he was a much better player heading into free agency than Werth is.
Teams thought that would be the template contract for Werth, but Boras managed to end up using the Holiday deal as he said he would ahead of time. Why teams are willing to be ripped off by him is just beyond me.
