Ya, ok sure.

I agree with this. The COY award almost always goes to someone who overachieves and beats expectations. It doesn't go to someone who consistently fields great teams. But I don't think Tressel is probably too upset about it--he just keeps winning 11 games a year with a Big 10 title and playing in big bowls.

I think Pryor has benefited from being coached by Tressel, but when he arrived he was known as a egomaniac. Many of upperclassmen really didn't get along with him. With that said, you would probably expect that from a freshman who comes in and takes the starting job from a senior.

I honestly thought Pryor would have had more problems at this point in his career than he has. And in problems I mean, saying the wrong thing to the media, not getting along with teammates, pouting, etc... But from all accounts, he's been exactly what you want the "face of your franchise" to be.

I do agree with the staying on top being difficult. The thing that could work against him is he has had the most talented team in the Big Ten going into the season how many years in a row? How many times has he gone through the Big Ten undefeated? This year they started out as a clear #2 team in the country and a lot of people thought they were better than Bama. They aren't expected to lose any game. That might give the media an excuse of sorts to give it to someone like Dantonio. Obviously Tressel should have won a handful of COY awards looking back on it, but on a year to year basis, I can see the argument being made for other coaches as well.

Tressel has definitely helped with that. I'm not sure 100% but I thought Pryor wasn't allowed to talk to the media his freshman year? He has had his share of foot in mouth moments with the Vick eye black and "everybody kills people" comment and more recently calling Herbstreit a fake ass Buckeye on twitter, which was deleted after a few media members saw it.

Tress does a great job and is certainly very desrving of any award, but I still think Dantonio is the choice. We were expected to contend for a national title this year (we aren't) but we did win the Big 10... Michigan State wasn't expected to do much at all and they finished with 1 loss.

You do realize how difficult it is to go undefeated in any major conference? I mean, OSU loss is currently to a top 5 team on their homefield. Nothing to be ashamed about.
Most talented? Absolutely from a recruiting standpoint. But you as well anyone should know that there is more to it then recruiting. Weis brought in how many highly ranked classes. You still haev to develop those players. Coming out of HS as a great player is one thing. Being great at a major university is a whole other world. And again, Tressel and staff have done so. Maybe better then most as OSU hasn't always had a top 5 recruiting class.
As for preseason rankings...well, not 1 team ranked in preseason top 5 is there anymore. And I believe OSU is the ONLY preseason top 5 team currently ranked in the top 10.
Do I believe Dantonio is deserving? Absolutely. But again, when you have a bullseye on your back from day 1, and consistantly do what Tressel has done, 6 straight 10 win seasons...thats IMO is much more difficult to do then to sneak up and have the occasional great year. As I said, MANY take it for granted and that includes the media as well.

By all accounts, Pryor is a perfectionist and will only use this as motivation to get better next season.

Anyone who has watched him closely so far in his career, can see that he has improved dramatically from his first season -- but he still lacks the confidence to let that ball go in time on routes that requiring throwing the ball before the receiver is in position. I have no doubt much of that comes from his fear (instilled by Tressel) of turning the ball over.

If Pryor actually does figure it all out next year and becomes the QB he's capable of -- a lot of Big Ten teams aren't going to be very happy campers. :)

Yes I understand that. But OSU was perceived to be on another level in the Big Ten. Yes I know OSU fans were weary of going to Madison and Iowa City, but the media, who votes on this award might have seen it differently.

Also, you aren't allowed to compare OSU to ND, ytownfootball said so. :)

OSU is on another level. When you win the conference 6 straight years, I'd call that anothe level. But that doesn't mean, on any given year, a team like Wisky or Iowa aren't going to be good and do what Wisky did this year. And being on another level doesn't mean you are going to just waltz through a BCS conference easily every year. It looks "easy" to us and most common fans. When in reality...its not.

I understand that. I'm not saying otherwise. Obviously to the people who vote on the COY award, they are looking at things other than the best team heading in to the season winning the conference. Right or wrong, it is what it is. Tressel has had plenty of success and I doubt he gets too caught up in not being named COY.

With Pryor not making first or second team in either selection, it makes you wonder what the answer would be if you had a secret ballot and asked Big Ten coaches which QB they'd most prefer to have on their team of all those available.

Does anyone here really believe Pryor would finish 5th?

I'm guessing not, which makes the coaches balloting all that more interesting.

Depends on the system, so yes it would be possible that Pryor would finish 5th on that list. If Pryor were at Michigan and was playing the exact same way, would you still be saying how great he is?

I haven't read the thread, so I'm sure this has already been brought up. I find it interesting that the coaches don't seem to look at Robinson as a real QB.

Do these folks understand how incredibly STUPID they look for having never given Tressel this award?

They probably do, but don't care.
DING! Everybody hates on Ohio State....it's just that simple. You should hear some of the smack I hear over here in State College. It would piss me off it it weren't so laughable. I just chuckle and tell them, "Ohio State owns the Big 10." They generally shut the fuck up.

I find it hard to believe that any of the coaches, outside of maybe Wisconsin, would turn down Pryor. We know Richrod and Paterno wanted him. I can't imagine, given his exceptional athleticism and pretty accurate passing, Purdue, Northwestern, Indiana, Illinois, and possibly even Michigan State would turn him down. Do you? If you include the three coaches who recruited him and just factor in the bottom four teams, that gives him at least a second team spot, and likely higher.

of course Purdue, Northwestern, Indiana, Illinois, and Minnesota would take him. Those are the worst teams in the league. Pryor is an exceptional athlete no doubt, if he isn't the top athlete in the country, I'd say he is definitely in the top 5. That doesn't mean he is a great QB and its been debated on here how many times already? He is a pretty accurate passer against Eastern Michigan and Ohio University, but he has a drop off against quality defenses where WRs are not running freely. I'm not going to say anything else about it because all it does is create another pissing match between OSU fans and fans of every other team.

How could Tressel get COY when he was supposed to do better than Dantonio and didn't.. yes lets reward a coach who underachieved this season that makes sense. Tressel more than likely finished 3rd this year behind Wisconsin's coach too.. idk his name but i know he better have gotten it before Tressel

A lot of Buckeyes fans are still held up on his troubles before this year, and because offensive linemen don't get attention, don't realize how great of a year he really had.

I said before the Iowa game that the Adams/Clayborn matchup was one of the most important, and Adams more than held his own against the future NFLer.

Also, Chekwa is a great corner. Very physical and has good ball skills. Being caught out of position at times happens in a zone, but in man to man coverage he was absolutely terrific.
Trust me, as a former offensive lineman and tackel myself, I paid close enough attention to him to notice that there wasn't really a wow factor for me that made me think gosh, this guy should be all league
