Indiana would be stupid to not pursue Fickell. Whether he would consider Indiana a good opportunity is another topic.

I think Fickell would be stupid to go to Indiana. IMO, its a deadend job unless they are going to improve facillities and make a committment to football and winning. You go to a place like that, its a no win situation IMO. He would be better off going to a smaller, MAC level school. There he would have a chance to do something, a chance to win then eventually find a better bigger job down the road.

I think he could succeed there, in the sense that making a bowl game is success. If he (or whoever the coach is) goes in and adopts the "Play 13" idea that Terry Hoeppner brought to the program before his untimely death then they'd do fine at Indiana. And Indiana has made more of a commitment to football in recently years and have made improvements to the stadium. Most of this was because of Hoeppner, and he brought some excitement and created some traditions that made it feel more like a football school. Whoever they hire needs to be exciting and charismatic. Indiana will never really be a program that competes for the Big Ten championship, but they could be a school that makes a bowl game regularly.

Which is all the more reason as to why I am shocked if he didn't want the Akron job. It has the top facilities in the MAC, a place he used to coach, and NE Ohio is a good recruiting base to have in your backyard. To work out the kinks of your first coaching job before making a move to a BCS school I think it should be a top destination.

Well, maybe he just doesn't want to leave OSU as much as people make it out to be. The guy grew up in Columbus(DeSales), played at OSU, now coaches at OSU. He has 4 kids and is only in his mid 30's. Maybe he is happy with what he is doing and where he is at. Patience often pays off in the long run. Just because his name surfaces for jobs doesn't mean he is the one putting his name out there. Who knows..

Very true. And has he ever talked about his desire to become a head coach? Some guys don't want to responsibility and it's possible that he wants to remain assistants their whole career. There are guys who are wonderful coordinators who choose to stay coordinators.

I agree. Having 4 kids is a big factor. You could be happy with your job instead of moving, working more, taking more criticism, etc. He has a good job now for sure. I'd be completely satisfied with it.

The kids thing in important. When Butch Davis was hired at Miami, Tressel was apparently offered the job first but turned it down because he had two young daughters and decided that the timing wasn't right for him to leave Youngstown State.

Which is better? To be an assistant coach at Ohio State or head coach at Kent State? Someone may have to make that decision soon.

As a three-time KSU grad, I would prefer not to get someone's assistant. I think Kent would be better off getting a successful head coach from a good Div. I-AA or Div. II school. And that person should be from the Midwest who knows local recruiting.

The best thing Kent has to offer a coach is our new AD who has gone on record as saying that he plans to build up the football program. I think it's about time. I'm one KSU alum who is fed up with being embarrassed constatly by our football team. I do have high expectations for the future and I'm looking forward to seeing us compete for the MAC title and play in some bowl games in the next few years.

Actually no coach has had a winning record at Indiana in over 3 years. They went 7-6 in 2007.

A coach's record would be their entire tenure at a school. So I am correct, the best winning percentage by an Indiana coach in the past 60 years is .47 or 69-77 by Bill Mallory

Thanks! I knew Corso was a coach there, because I've heard a story about him taking a pic of the team and scoreboard once at half time when they had a lead against OSU. But I don't follow IU enough (at all really) to have any idea about the rest of them.

Neither do I. I just looked up the football program on Wikipedia and clicked on a few of the coaches.

Ha, and I thought that was sarcasm! Actually, its more of a HUGE HOLE than a stepping stone. Bill Mallory actually had IU going pretty decent for a while. They actually beat up OSU in one of the darkest days of Ohio Stadium. But since him..not much success at all. As I said, until IU is willing to put some money into that program...it just isn't a very good job at all IMO.
