Fickell only leaves if he is passed over for the HC spot when Tressel retires, and with Tress likely being part of the decision as to who is hired, Fickell probably has a pretty good shot at being the next coach at tOSU. Maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part, because he is one of the best recruiters in the game.

I don't want someone who has no head coaching experience. We've seen time and time again throughout college football that guys who get promoted to being a head coach at a major program with no head coaching experience usually don't work out very well.
And to answer your original question se-alum, yes, I do that he could learn a lot by being a MAC head coach. Would he learn more than just by studying under Tressel? Not necessarily, but he would learn things that he can't under Tressel. There are somethings that you can really only learn by doing. It's one thing to have a guy explain to you how he coordinates recruiting or practice schedules, or to see how he manages a staff, but it's something else entirely to have to do it. It's different when you have a player sit in your office and talk about wanting to quit or transfer because he doesn't have enough playing time, or to get into an argument with an assistant who disagrees with a decision you made, or to have to deal with the media. There are a lot of things that a head coach can only really learn by doing, and I'd prefer that he not have to learn those things on the job at OSU. If he does, it could be bad for our football program. I'd rather see him go somewhere else and learn and make mistakes there, and then come back once he knows more of what it takes to be a head coach and once he's figured out what kind of head coach he is.
