I hope the publics win the 4 that they have a chnce at I really do ..But I see the catholic schools winning 4 of these titles ...now they are what 10% of all schools and they win 65% of football titles maybe more ....just saying food for thought....I am pulling for Buhctel or Marlington and Uniontown Lake and the Shadyside even though they have no chance....
So I keep hearing public school fans bring up this stat and it just never sounded right to me. So I went through and tracked the winners of all the titles...in every division...for every year.
D1 - 6 private schools have won the state title a total of 23 times. Before people say anything about the disparity here...9 public schools won the other 15 titles (and it is technically 8...but I'm counting Warren Western Reserve and Warren Harding as two separate schools). All total, 15 teams have accounted for all 38 titles. Why is it that people complain about X, Iggy, and St. Ed...and not Princeton, Harding, McKinley, and Hilliard Davidson.
D2 - 9 private schools have won 12 state titles, while 15 public schools have won 18 titles.
D3 - 10 private schools have won 24 state titles, while 12 public schools have won the other 14 titles.
D4 - 9 private schools have won 11 state titles, while 11 public schools have won 19 titles.
D5 - 6 private schools have won 15 state titles, while 16 public schools have won 23 titles.
D6- 2 private schools have won 7 state titles, while 5 public schools have won the other 9 titles.
All total...when you take out teams that have won titles in multiple divisions, there are 34 private schools that have won at least one state title. 64 different public schools have won the state title a total of 98 times, while those 34 private schools make up the other 92 titles.
So the privates account for only about 48% of the state football titles.
I also find it funny that the people that advocate the separation of the privates and publics and the multiplier system do so in the name of the smaller divisions. I've read on here more times than I can count how it's not fair that Ursuline is in D5...and those poor little rural schools don't stand a chance. So do those who feel that way ignore the fact that the publics hold the advantage 51-33 in divisions 4-6? Should teams like St. Thomas Aquinas and JFK be crying for Maria Stein Marion Local, St. Henry, Coldwater, Versailles, and Germantown Valley View to have to have a multiplier or be in their own playoffs?
