The problem is you need amazing safetys who can come up and play LB when needed in the run game. He has never had those guys, never will. To play with teams like Wisky, Iowa, MSU, OSU, etc having 5 DB's isn't going to help. And when Williams stands up it's either a 3-4-4 (he is the 4th LB tech or the star being the 4th) and sometimes a 3-3-5 in PASSING situations.
Again, not disagreeing. You kind of made my point. He doesn't have the talent, no matter the scheme. And when it takes 3/4 of a season for the defensive staff to get players in the right positions, that is not scheme. Lack of fundamentals, like tackling and gaps, is not scheme.
Defensive staff needs to go. 3-3-5 needs to go. Build the defense from the ground up. It's not going to be quick or easy.
At this point, even with a 7-5 season, it may be time for RR to go. He is the one that forced the DC to run a 3-3-5 that he had never run. The boo birds were out today, and the AD was on the sideline. I'm sure those boos were ringing loud.
