IMO, it's too soon to call anyone a bust. If anyone from 2007 or later is out of the league now, or will be soon, then they're a bust. If not, then the verdicts not final with them.


FWIW, Oden was playing at a high level last year before his injury, that alone should prevent anyone from saying he's a bust. I also believe injuries shouldn't be counted against someone when discussing that player's bust status, although they do matter to me when discussing whether a pick was a bust (i.e. the Blazer's overall #1 pick was a bust, even if Oden isn't, because of injury). Strange ass logic, but that's how I feel.

Busts are directly linked to where they were drafted.

Oden, for being the #1 overall is a bust (with time to make amends). But even if he is solid, the fact that Durant went 2 will always make his accomplishments less. Its like The Dream going #2 with Jordan #3.

Conley was a lottery pick. He is playing solid, but not up to his draft position yet. You take PGs in the lottery to lead teams to greatness. He isnt a bust, but he hasnt lived up to the draft position.

Cook was taken really late in the first. Tough to label those guys, but its telling that he regressed a ton last year and has been traded since then.

Koufos and Mullens Im calling a bust already. Guys with their skill sets dont usually improve a whole lot from what we see initially. Its tough for post players to get better. Neither can crack the rotation and Mullens has spent a lot of time in the D league. You dont spend lottery picks for players to not crack the regular rotation by this point in their careers.


As much as its unfair to the players. Busts are related to draft position, media hype and players taken before/after.

The making money = not a bust is just stupid.

Oden is absolutely a bust at this point. There is no reason to ever think he will be entirely healthy and no reason to think he will ever be a top player in the NBA.

Cook has been disappointing, but I still think he has time.

Conley has been disappointing and would be considered an underachiever based upon where he was drafted.

Mullens and Koufos were both drafted based on potential, so you have to give them a little bit more time, but bust is written all over them.

After one week what has jumped out as surprising? I think the Nets are off to a good start at 2-1 with a loss to the Heat. I'm also a little surprised at Houston starting 0-3.

I dont think anyone would not want it, and sure they are rich and living the life. It doesnt mean that arent busts though...at least by the general consensus of what constitutes a bust.

Look I know a friggin bust when I see one. Am I a little less critical due to my personal feelings on a job everyone would want? Hell ya I am. Am I not being clear that I see fewer "busts" by the general use of the term because they're being paid to play a game? That's all I'm commenting on.

I agree what the consensus is, that being where they're drafted, doesn't mean anything to me though as I and everyone else would switch spots in a heartbeat. Just sayin'

Nobody is saying that its not a desired job, anybody on this site would take a paycheck to ride the pine. But if you're drafted to start, and or contribute to your team and you are either Injured year in and out, or cannot even get off the bench. Then theres no getting around that you're a bust.

I dont think hes a bust. The kid is only 23 years old and it seems like the game is starting to slow down for him. I think hes going to be a very solid player in the league. 15, 8 and 5 this year.

Generally I would say that a contract offer like this takes off the bust label, but what did Darko get this offseason?

I would not classify Conley as a bust, but slightly as a underachiever based upon where he was drafted. Regardless of that, I love him as a player and good for him for getting his payday.

Conley is the starting PG on a good team, hardly a bust. Typical idiot response from you with zero to back it up. As for Darko, like I have said before (see Anderson Varejao convo) big men are a premimum and always over paid. Its part of the league which you repeatedly fail to understand.

Are you "MIND BOGGLED" at how much he was paid? Darko came in last season and played very well for them towards the end of the season. They wanted to keep him, and even though he's certaintly a draft bust at #2 overall, he is still a skilled big man, and skilled big men get paid very well because there is only a few of them on the planet.

As for Conley, he needed another year in college, and I think he would have stayed had he not played amazing in the tournament, meaning he had to leave when his stock was at the highest. Sure he isn't lighting up your jerk off material stat sheet you covenant so much, but you have to consider the disarray the organization was in when he was drafted. Coaching changes, terrible players surrounding him etc... But you're a dumbass 5 year communtiy college graduate, so I suppose that's too much for you to comprehend.

He was drafted 4th overall and has averaged 10.9 ppg, 4.7 apg, and 2.8 rpg. That is underachieving at its finest! No one in the world is spending a 4th overall pick for those numbers.

HOWEVER....he is only 23 and looks to be turning the corner, so he can eliminate the bust talk and make himself worthy of the lofty expectations and pick. But thus far...how has he not been an underachiever?
