Before they showed the replays from the goalpost viewpoint I was sure it was a touchdown with the fumble caused by the ground or at least after it broke the plane. That's what it looked like to the side judge, a clear touchdown. So he waves the play dead. You can't call the play dead and then look at a replay and say "oh, I was wrong" and then say "who picked the ball up after I called it dead? You, ok, your ball now."
Good officiating.
I disagree that the side judges view made it seem like it was a clear TD. The live TV view was from his vantage point and my intial reaction to it live was that the ball was going forward too fast for it to be in the control of the QB. So I was very surprised he would immediately raise his arms and blow his whistle, especially with the usually conservative approach the officials take on a goal line potentially scoring play since repaly came into being. Once the side jusdge did that mistake, the outcome was correctly handled.
Do we know where home is for the side judge? Because his quick, erroneous action saved it for the Steelers. The ref, from the Pitt area, did what was appropriate for what happened before he had to rule, so I wouldn't blame him with any homer favoritism.
