After a great season the Reds looked woefully overmatched in the NLDS. What steps do you think we need to return to the postseason?

-I noticed during the Philly series that the Reds are in desperate need of a bat to protect Votto. A Cincinnati Matt Holliday. I don't think we'll be able to get a player of the quality but you get the idea. Rolen was out of his element the entire final month or so + the playoffs. Dude got old quick. They need to package their young guys and get it somebody in here. Probably a LF because the other logical position would be 3B and a good 3B is hard to come by.

- Either get rid of Rolen while you still can or do a platoon like they did for the catchers to keep him fresh. Francisco and him could share playing time and get Francisco experience all while resting Rolen

- Get rid of Cabrera. His job is done here. He was a good leader and was instrumental in getting the winning atmosphere going. Now he is a below average SS who hits .260 (he used to be a good fielder). The problem for him is that we now have outstanding fielding SS who can hit .260

- Possibly deal Heisey in the aforementioned clean-up hitter deal. Guy is a nice player, but I doubt he ever really becomes a big time player. If he was the CF he'd be fine, but Stubbs has that spot, and I don't think Heisey has the power to play LF consistently.

-Catcher, 1B, 2B, SS, CF, RF are all good. Backups are solid too

- Bailey, Volquez, Wood, Cueto, and Chapman should make up a nice rotation. Deal Arroyo?

-Just my $.02 for now

I don't like Chapman starting. I think he should be out closer or set up guy next year. I don't want him to turn into Strasburg.

Strasburg was a freak injury. Chapman could just as easily blow out his arm in the pen. In fact I'd probably argue pitching in the bullpen is much harder on an arm. (Just think pitching 100% multiple times per week, warming up and not getting in). Plus I think it harms his development. He became a two pitch pitcher out of the pen. If he is a starter he will begin to develop his other pitches.

With all that being said, I can see the Reds doing this and keeping Arroyo.

I think it's already been determined by the FO and Dutsy that Aroldis will be a starter come Spring Training.

It's also already been confirmed that Walt will start Arroyo. So who is Aroldis going to take over in the rotation? I just see him in the bullpen for another year or so.

Bronson isn't going anywhere. And to borrow a line from sleeper, "you can take that to the bank."

If Walt gets rid of Bronson, the Reds will not be seeing the playoffs next year.

Unless they trade one of their young pitchers I don't see a spot for Arroyo. Bailey will start, Volquez will start, Cueto will start, and Wood looks like a nice pitcher too. They have 6 (7 if you count LeCure) good pitchers who can start and only 5 spots.

I like Arroyo a lot, but don't you think the young guys will win out?

This is a Dusty Baker coached ball club. Vets will ALWAYS have a spot over young guys.

You don't see a spot for ARROYO??!!

What team are you watching? He was our best pitcher this year, and the best pitcher last year. Don't forget Dusty's tendencies towards veterans.

He will most likely be the opening day starter next year for the Reds.

Unless something drastic/uncalled for happens, Bronson will be the #1 guy next year. But then again, I can see Cueto having a great ST and Dusty giving him the nod as well.

I forgot about Leake too. Yeah I like Arroyo. I'm a big fan of Arroyo. I just see a lot of young guys who the Reds will want to keep around and I see only 5 spots in the rotation. Do send Wood to AAA? Leake to AAA? They've already proven they can pitch in the big leagues. I'm not saying they should trade Arroyo. Not saying they should at all. Just noticing he's the one really old guy on the staff on a team with many talented young pitchers

As I type all that, I read this from Marty:

Q. Do you see the Reds going out and getting a true No. 1 starter in the off-season? That may mean packaging together players that would make it a big trade?

Brennaman: I truly believe that their No. 1 starter next year will be either Edison Volquez or Aroldis Chapman. And I’d take my chances with either one of them. Both have the ability to be a “lock-down” starter, and that is something that they did not have this season.

I love Edinson. Since we made the trade, he has been on of my favorite Reds.

But he has a LONG, LONG way to go before he is a "lock-down" starter.

I see Chapman being the number one guy next year. He will probably be the de facto number one though. Meaning Dusty starts Cueto, Volquez, or Arroyo on opening day but it is obvious to everybody who the "guy" is

Arroyo will absolutely be back next season. The top 3 spots in the rotation are, IMO, set in stone as of right now:

Arroyo
Volquez
Cueto

The remaining two spots will be filled with the two guys with the best spring. I'd guess Wood and Leake with Chapman starting the year in AAA. I wouldn't mind seeing Bailey taking Chapman's current spot in the bullpen to get some experience and possibly be moved into the closers role in 2012.

I really want the Reds to make a run at Carl Crawford and/or Felix Hernandez. Crawford is going to be a free agent so the only obstacle there is money. A lot will be coming off the books with Harang leaving but it will obviously take more than the $12 or so million (I believe that is close to how much Harang would be making). The Mariners would likely move King Felix for a good enough package of players, I wonder if the Reds could put anything together to get him in Cincinnati?

They need a big bat behind Votto to bat 4th OR Carl Crawford.

Oh, and the most important thing......PLATE APPROACHES THAT BATTLE THE PITCHER...not the bottle rocket approach 7 out of 8 at bats

Just curious because I really don't follow the Reds at all....are they a one shot wonder? I mean, are they a small market team(like my Indians) that will blow this thing up since it didn't work out and now they will have to pay some big money? Do they have an owner that is committed to winning and paying/doing what it takes to compete with the big boys?

They'll be in it for a while. Castellini promised a winner and you can't deny Jocketty's track record.

The Reds are not a one-hit wonder. It'd be different if the Reds made the NLCS and lost 4-3. But they got swept in the 1st round of the playoffs, no way will Castellini sell. He'll buy/trade to upgrade the team.
