at this point I think the message will be "the Phillies might be the better team but we're a lot better team than we showed in Game 2 with the errors"
even if the Reds can't come back all the way, the focus should be to play a good, sharp Game 3

Three HBPs, 4 errors, and a fielder's choice that yielded no outs! The Reds are a play-off caliber team, but they learned tonight that they are not yet of championship caliber! They can turn it around and become a championship caliber team this season, but the odds are long!

A good April through August, bad September got them in this position, and a terrible October.
...and a good Philly team. Still more baseball to be played. I'm going to keep watching them even though it appears they are overmatched and I'll hope for a miracle. Crazier things have happened.

Yup. I was talking to my dad about this. He's been very average for some time now. He looks old. If you're not hitting you should at least be fielding your position... he didn't do that too well tonight either

I was very impressed with Phillips' defensive approach tonight! Not taking the chances with flashy play, and tried to be prudent. A shame it didn't work out for him on defnense. A shame that his defense ruined a great night for him and the team.

Did you guys notice how rarely TBS was using their "K zone" tonight. They went out of their way to not use it tonight. They also never gave a good replay of the close play at 2nd. I smell a conspiracy from Bud Selig to try and slow down some of the drubbing he's been taking over the past few nights

The Phillies reaction told me everything I needed to know. If Utley gets hit up and in like that you can guarantee Manuel and the trainer are dry humping Utley all the way to 1st base. They didn't even go out there did they?

1. I had that same thought...at some of the most crucial plays or calls, there was no K zone or replay.jordo212000;512580 wrote:Did you guys notice how rarely TBS was using their "K zone" tonight. 2. definitely a major defensive breakdown tonite. The very strength of the Reds all year...bullpen and defense...deserted us tonite.
3. I think if you can outlaw vuvuzelas in soccer....and be concerned enough about the batter's eye to move an umpire...you should be able to outlaw a sea of waving white towels.
that there is pure bullshot!!!!

I'm alright with losing. I mean its not like part of me and part of all of us didn't realize beating the Phillies would be difficult. But seriously what the hell was tonight supposed to be? 4 errors? 3 unearned runs in the 7th to take the lead for good?
You can take a whole season of 162 games and they feel like a long time ago after 2 of these games..

A little visual evidence on the Utley play at 2nd. Ball in glove. Utley not yet to the bag.

I wonder how that inning would have went if Utley wasn't incorrectly given a free base and then incorrectly called safe at 2nd?

The weird thing about that play is Utley beat the ball to the base. For some reason his front foot was in front of the base instead of right on it. It was like he was just trying to break up a double play and didn't think he'd make it in safely anyway. From the ump's point of view, his foot appeared to touch the bag.

I think that is exactly what happened. But either way that call has to be made. The weird thing about that play is Utley beat the ball to the base. I think I'm more disgusted with the free base than the safe call at 2nd. Umpire wasn't even looking when Utley was "hit." He was too busy getting out of the way so it didn't hit him in the face.

The call at 2nd base was questionable and after review from that picture looks to be incorrect BUT at the same time, I have seen that call go the other way when they are turning a DP and the fielder gets the benefit of not touching the base.
From the angle of the ump, he would have seen Utley's foot in between him and the bag, and his foot was up the bag when the ball was caught, this is why I believe he was called safe.
Do you have a picture of Utley missing 3rd base when he was rounding? Saw the replay and it looked like that happened but could not tell. If they would have seen that it would have been huge! So really, Utley went to first on a questionable call, go to 2nd on a questionable call, and then scored without hitting 3rd possibly?!

Reds fans can be upset at the calls, but they should be upset about 4 errors.

I think he hit 3rd. His foot/ankle kinda rolled. Which to me says he hit the base. The call at 2nd base was questionable and after review from that picture looks to be incorrect BUT at the same time, I have seen that call go the other way when they are turning a DP and the fielder gets the benefit of not touching the base.

But either way, the missed call at 2nd and the missed HBP are inexcusable.

Yea, I didn't see the replay on the 3rd base play again so that may be correct.
Reds have bounced back all year, wonder if they can climb this improbable mountain?
I hope, I Have NLCS tickets I could unload if they make a run. Didn't get any NLDS tickets but they said they are going 5-6 times face right now.
