Freshman Year:
6'1 215lbs.
Football: Two-way starter as DE/FB at Toledo St. Francis on the freshmen team. When we played against Whitmer I was up against Kevin Koger (TE at Whitmer) and did pretty well.
Wrestling: I had never wrestled before but once St. Francis' Athletic Director found out I was JD Bergman's cousin he basically made we wrestle. I wrestled 285 and went 9-4 on the JV team. Won my first 7 matches, and won the first match via pin in :14. That's gotta be a record.
Track: My sister was a State Champion in shot put two years prior, so the coaches basically made me do this too. I never broke the freshmen record in a meet, but did in practice several times. Ended up throwing like 39'
....I decided to transfer to Oregon Cardinal Stritch because I didn't want to play college sports (my two sisters who played D-I sports didn't enjoy it). Looking back I wonder where I'd be if I had chosen to stay at a school that took athletics seriously.
Sophomore Year
6'2 220lbs.
Football: Started at DE/RG. Team went 6-4, lost the TAAC Championship on a missed two-point conversion play. I had 36 tackles. Didn't garner any conference recognition.
Wrestling: Went 29-21 at 285lbs. Won the unofficial TAAC trimatch. Qualified for Districts. Beat a kid from St. Edward, that was pretty awesome.
Track: Ran 4x100 and threw shot put and discus. Was the leading thrower in the team, took second at TAAC.
Junior Year
6'2 225lbs.
football: The year before I thought I'd dominate, so I slacked off in training. I spent the entire summer running and lifting as I should have because I knew I was better than the kids getting all-conference honors and I didn't get shit. For example, our other DE had 25 tackles and was 1st-team conference. I knew my 36 tackles sucked but the fact that he got honors made me furious. I got my 40-yd time down to 4.9, had the fastest shuttle time on the team (our WR was 1st-team all-state, and our CB, RB, and S all played in college so I thought it was a sizable feat), and was in pretty solid shape. I was elected as the fourth and final captain, but then the coaches decided to "split" the last captain spot between myself, our QB (plays FCS now) and previously mentioned LT/DE (recruited by Yale but decided honors at OSU). I decided to quit the team after such an insult but an hour later opted it'd be better to basically destroy opponents and get ~80 tackles and show everyone I was better than our other DE.
First game I had 17 tackles, 2 sacks, and a forced fumble. He had 3 tackles. However due to our OLB transferring the coaches moved me there after seeing how improved I was. I had no idea what I was doing but picked it up eventually. I was pretty livid that I no longer had the chance to show how good of a DE I was. I finished the season with 81 tackles, and despite being 1st-team offense, I didn't get anything for defense. He who shall not be named was 1st-team with 54 tackles.
Team went 8-3, won the conference and made the playoffs.
Wrestling: I broke my foot and tore a toe ligament and sat out 6 weeks. I came back and got second in every regular season tournament. I went 18-12, took second in the nascent OWL conference at 215lbs, qualified for districts at 285lbs and was a match away from state. Lost to the kid who ended up playing 7th. Three of the four qualifies placed, and the one who didn't placed the year before and drew the State Champion and 3rd place guy to go 0-2. Sucked for him. I probably shouldn't have bounced around weight classes.
Track: Broke the school record with 44' in the shot put. Not bad for not having a coach.
Senior Year:
6'2 255 lbs.
I gained a bunch of weight to make a run at 285lbs and playing collegiate football as a DE. So I basically exploded. Still ran a 4.9 though.
Football: During the second scrimmage I herniated two discs in my neck, and 4/5 doctors told me not to play anymore. I was young and dumb and played anyway. I was able to share time at DE/OLB though to avoid nasty collisions. I ended the season with 112 tackles, set the single-game school tackle record with 27. Was first-team OL, but still only 2nd-team DE. Our team went 1-9 and the coach was canned. I was selected to the all-star game but they denied me once they saw my medical records and the trainer just said "you're one more hit away from some serious, serious, damage." That's when it finally clicked how hurt I was and I decided not to walk-on at Toledo. I did start the last five games at RB, so that was awesome.
Wrestling: Missed the first month due to neck examinations. Doctors again recommended me to not play. I end up going 30-7 and winning the conference. I couldn't shoot anything but an outside single due to my neck, so when I had to face the good guys it would always go to OT and from there it was luck. Obviously, I couldn't make it as far in the post season. I dropped to 5th at sectionals (Kid I beat was 36-15, talk about a stacked sectional!)
Track: I was throwing 45', but couldn't improve my strength due to my neck, so I decided to switch to the spin in a month for TAACs. I was self-taught after watching guys at meets do it haha I finished with 49'9.25 at TAAC and won them, finally. I made it to regional finals.
In hindsight I really would've liked to have seen what I could've done with a good neck or even a mindset that college sports are worthwhile. I have back and neck pain every day, and will probably have to get surgery in the near future to repair it all. I spend more time than I should thinking about how many guys I competed against and won are playing sports in college today. I would be lying if a small portion of my didn't want to get neck surgery tomorrow, work out religiously, and walk-on at Ohio State to be a tackling dummy. I work with Scott Sika and am friends with Ben St. John, if they can find a spot on that roster, it wouldn't be impossible for me.
