My job isn't really a job to me. It's like I've been on vacation for many years. In a way it does define me.

I guess my job defines me in a way. not because it changed me or makes me who i am, just because if you knew me pretty good and i told you what i did, you'd be like "yeah i can see that".

My job does define me in a sense that when I tell people what I do for a living people want to talk to me ad nauseum about the subject, tell me their own personal stories or run a hypothetical by me or want me to get involved in their situation. Sometimes that is a good thing, a lot of time it is not. Generally speaking when I am out getting my haircut or whatever and the person is trying to make conversation with me, I lie to them about what I do. It's just the way it is.

I usually do go home and clear my thoughts. I focus on what I need to get accomplished at home and enjoy time with my family. I'd be lying though if I said things never pop in my head at home or when I am away from the office on vacation I am wondering what is going on in the office.

Same. Though I'm not familiar with this "vacation" thing you mentioned.

If you say, "I'm a plumber," or "I'm a teacher," people nod, smile, and let it go. But if you tell them that you're an atty, they insist on sharing a story with you, or opining about the legal system, or making some comment about lawyers, etc. I guess it comes with the territory.

Whatever. Nobody does that. Oh by the way...let's say there's this website, like a message board....and someone called you a cop hater. Could you maybe sue them for being racist?

I have a law degree. Unlike my friend, FFT, I do not currently practice law. I am a Litigation Claims Specialist for medical professional liability insurance carrier. Basically when someone sues a doctor, nurse or a hospital for medical malpractice I handle the cases, set reserves and when applicable, negotiate and settle the case or make the decision to try the case. I hire the guy who is my insured's lawyer. He reports to me, we discuss litigation strategy, I pay his bill but he is technically their lawyer. Therefore I can take a little vacation (well maybe one) every year or so.

My job defines who I am whether I like it or not. Between the elementary music classes that I teach, the middle school and high school bands, and coaching, I have over 300 hundred kids who know me as the band director or a football coach, and I am working 11 and 12 hour days. Some days I love it, but there are many days where I hate it (and today has been one of them). I give at least two weekends a month to the school for various fundraisers, sporting events, extras duties, and school events. I live for free time, but I usually only have it on the weekends I am not working. My employer owns my house which has huge perks but even my residence is part of my job. My job defines me, and I am starting to realize that I hate it.

Absolutely not. I am in my job to put it on the resume. I hate the hours and mildly dislike the work. Need to put in around 3 years though for it to get me a better job in private industry.

My job does not define me - but I do very well at it and enjoy it because it's well suited to my personality.

I've held a job of one kind or another for 38 years. I've found that you go through cycles in these things. First you are grateful for the work. You try to do well as a sign of appreciation to your employer.

But as time goes on you begin to see the BS. In every job there are douche bags...a self-agrandizing boss, a co-worker who sees you as a threat and makes it their life's work to make your life hell, shitty working conditions, etc.

But then you go home to the family and you remember why you do it.

As an owner of two businesses I'm motivated every day and because the two are so different in product market every day is a new day with new issue. I take my position as an owner as relaxed as possible but the position as a leader, thinker, innovator and problem solver serious and dedicated.

Does my work define who I am ….. My past history defines who I am, my profession defines who I want to be.
