After all these years, and just as many people living in abject poverty, what was his first clue?

Maybe I'm a little off, but I'm coming to like Castro the last few weeks. He has spoken out against nuclear weapons, against Iran's drive for a weapon and foreign policy, regretted his decision in the Cuban missile crisis and his various decisions over the years.

Castro is FOS. 50 years later and all of a sudden he comes to the realization it does not work? Cuba has been dirt poor and starving for the past 49 years. What makes it different now? He is just trying to engender himself to a world that is sympathetic to the Red cause and who feels sorry for an aging, dying man. He knows the guy who occupies the White House and the majority of Congress share some of his world views, so he is hoping to make the most out of this mea culpa as much as he can.

I'm thinking his brother has alot to do with that. He [brother] is probably sick of Fidel and his policies and wants something different. And if he can get cooperation from other countries, it would sure help the cause. So, he's making Fidel slowly and surely recant alot of things.

Cuba has a population of 5.1 million and the government is going to lay off 500,000 of them. That's some serious unemployment.

This part especially made me LOL
The labor overhaul comes less than a week after Fidel Castro caused a stir around the globe when he was quoted by visiting American magazine writer Jeffrey Goldberg as saying Cuba's communist economy no longer works.

Castro later said that while he was not misquoted, his words were misinterpreted - and that he meant to say capitalist reforms could never work in Cuba.
I don't know how you interpret "Cuba's communist economy no longer works" to mean capitalist reforms would never work in Cuba.

Your thoughts and emotions are exactly what Castro hopes will sweep most of Americans and our politicians. In reality he still hates our guts, would slit our throats if it were to his advantage and is only doing this now out of desperation. Castro is no hero.

The US boycotts and denial of American tourism in Cuba also played a role in Cuba's demise. Having to buy Cuban cigars under the table sucked back in the day.

The US only shells out billions to "peaceful" countries like Israel, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

He's still gonna ask. He wouldn't be talking this crap if he wasn't. I'm guessing he's tired of knobbing Hugo Chavez for pennies. He needs some serious cash to save his statues from being torn down when he finally kicks it.

Cubans are going to be allowed to work for themselves now. Seems like socialism is crumbling there...

Yep....only socialism is like a virus that won't go away and it headed North to infect us.

I wonder if Michael Moore will be going back to do a documentary on how it's not working now?

Communism doesn't work, so moving closer to communism away from capitalism is a good thing? Yes, I realize socialism and communism are not the same, but economically not that different.
