Has anyone else had to update their maps on their Garmin Car GPS lately?

I have been getting messages on my GPS unit that the maps are over a year old and need updated. During this time, our GPS (nuvi 255W) has been acting crazy and telling us to go the wrong way and stuff like that. I figured it was due to the maps update needed...so I went out and bought the USB cord $15.

I am sitting here now and I already did the software update, and get ready to do the map update when it says we have to pay $50. That seems crazy to me...especially how cheap GPS units are these days!

Do you think the software update will be sufficient or do I need to buy the map update?

Is there any sites out there where I can upload a free version of the maps?

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks!

I though it was $65? Either way, I thought it was crazy as well, and I still have not purchased the map update.

I bought my wife and I GPS units last Christmas. They give you a free update within 90 days of purchase, so I did that for both. We really don't use them that often though. I have the Droid, which has free voice nav, so I tend to use that when I need it. But the major thing is that we just don't go far enough from home to take advantage of them a lot. So when my time comes for the update message, i'm not likely to do it.

I also have the Nuvi 255W and you do have to pay to update your maps. I need to do this too because several times I've been going to places it couldn't find becuase it was a newer road, or because house numbers had been redone so it took me to the wrong place. It looks like it's about $50 for a single update or $90 for lifetime updates.

I have a nuvi but I don't know the model number off the top of my head. I'll have to look later today.

There are places to get the updates online if you know where to look and don't mind breaking the law. As much as the maps cost they should expect people to find ways around it.
