The season kicked off at 7 for the Zips against #2 ranked UNC Tar Heels. 74 minutes in and the Zips are up 3-0 with 2 freshman midfielders scoring already. Its a busy weekend for the team down here in NC as the Zips will play #3 Wake Forest on Sunday.

If you want to read more about the program there is a great article on CNNSI about coach Caleb Porter

Toledo football? lol The Zips football team probably won't be much better this year but hopefully they don't let Syracuse beat them that bad

Cleveland State.

Last time they played Akron was 2008 and it went to double ot before Akron scored the winning goal with about a minute left in the second ot. Hopefully this years game can be competetive like that.

That's really cool your brother plays for CSU. They have a nice downtown stadium.

Good to see Akron winning again. Isn't this team pretty much the same one as last years team (most of them our returning starters i think). I just hope this year they can wint he whole damn thing becauseOhio is areat soccer state

sportchampps,

I know Teal Bunbury, Blair Gavin and Ben Zemanski left from the team last season. Gavin and Zemanski were replaced with two freshman, Stevenson and Kitchen who are the two that scored yesterday. They moved a starter from last year, Darlington Nagbe, to striker to replace Bunbury and brought a defender off the bench for Nagbe's old position. So long story short, yes it is close to the same team as last year. Kitchen is a good freshman, #2 player in his recruiting class and a captain of his age brackets U.S. national team.

I believe they lost 3 players to the MLS, other than that I think everyone returns. I believe they had an all freshman backline last year. This team should be better than lasts

Looked at the starters from last night. They have another freshman striker from Jamaica, Darren Mattocks start last night and brought another Jamaican freshman McKauly Tulloch off the bench. A midfielder freshman Martin Ontiveros came off the bench who is on the U18 Costa Rican team and came from what is turning into a pipeline, the IMG Academy in Florida.

Edit: Ontiveros is from the U.S. and on the U18 national team. Renaldo Brenes is also from IMG and he's the freshman on the Costa Rican team. My bad

Not a chance Cleveland St. will be able compete, the Zips could win this match up starting their reserves.

Akron took out #3 Wake Forest last night, 2-0. Talk about starting out with a bang, beating two ACC powers by a combined 5-0.

I think sites were using different rankings. There isn't a consensus poll that is used. One had UNC #2 and Akron #1 which was what NCAA.com had on its site. Another said the Zips were #1 and UNC #4.

There are four poles used in college soccer, which is kind of a pain. It all depends on what media outlet is reporting and which ranking they feel like using. Akron should be the consensus #1 this week, I think there was one poll that had them at #2 to start the year.

Didn't think you were. Its just a matter of the sites preference in ranking source. Either way Akron just showed they could compete with the big boys of the ACC. If you think us Buckeye fans can get arrogant about the football team, the ACC soccer fans are much much worse.

Same thing could have been said about Akron two years ago. And yet that game was a minute from going to PKs.

But it will very likely not be a close game.

So I just got word I will be broadcasting the Akron @ BGSU game this Saturday. Any info on the team you guys can give me would be appreciated (either squad) particularly some back stories or information that isnt readily available on the internet, though that would be helpful as well. I am working all day tomorrow filming for the HS football games so I wont have much time other than the next few hours to do research.

Thanks.

Wish I could help Laley. I know the generic stuff, 3 MLS picks last year (2 first rounders), 2009 #1 draft pick Steve Zakuani. I know its in BG but you can talk about the benefits of success as Akron just completed phase 1 of 2 in renovating the soccer stadium. Porter was courted by DC United this past offseason and other boards figure the United will try again this year since they already fired their coach.

If I think of anything else I will post it

Good stuff guys. If anything else comes to mind post it!

Im currently trying to do BG research (in my 1 hour break today) since its always harder to talk about the bad team.
