I saw on TWC Jim Cantori profiling lots of multimillion dollar houses on the beach that didn't have their windows boarded up, taped, or anything.
I can't imagine not wanting to minimalize any destruction that you possibly could. I can't imagine not even trying.
Stupid Asses!

People do not take these seriously. They continue to ignore evacuation orders, etc...because they think it is never going to actually hit where they live, or it won't be as bad as predicted if and when it does. Katrina learned a hard, hard lesson. Yes their STATE Govt failed them for a long time but they also failed themselves, they didn't get out when told!!

Hopefully the residents and government of North Carolina learned something from Katrina.

Don't stay in the path of a 150 mph hurricane.....

My scientific logic says that people don't take these hurricanes seriously because of the stupid names given to them. When I think Katrina, I think "in the kitchen and make me a sammich!" and when I think Earl, I think of some mulleted white trash cooking meth in his run-down barn. You want people to take hurricanes seriously, give them dangerous names like Hurricane WRATHOFKHAN or something like that.

If we want people to start taking these things seriously, we need to make them seriously reap the consequences of ignoring the warnings. No more federal aid to anyone who stays behind after being told to leave. Let them pay for the costs of any rescues. Don't spend billions of dollars to rebuild homes if people fail to protect themselves. Etc, etc. No point in these people following the warnings if they know the federal government is there to hold their hands and save them from themselves.

I think that's the problem right there. People think that between FEMA and their insurance, they don't have to worry about a thing. They get L.A.Z.Y. and complaisant.
I mean really... you own a home like that (the ones I saw on the beach) and you cannot find the money or the time to tape/board up your windows? It's the least little thing you can do to try to minimalize any damage that will happen. I know that the windows are the least important, considering a surge might take the whole house; but if a surge doesn't happen, then at least your trying to keep your interior protected.

There is an old comedy bit by Lewis Black about this.

"We don't name tornadoes, why do we name hurricanes? Could anyone take a tornado seriously if we named it? Flee! Tornado Timmy is coming! We need to name hurricanes by more serious names like Hurricane HOLY SHIT!

My grandmother sent me a link to the webcam at Okracoke Island Airport, just a couple miles north of the town.
