Leaving due to lack of playing time.
With turner or Buford, or both leaving. Gives osu another scholly. Though this will hurt their NCAA score.. Whatever that thing is with grades and players not finishing out semesters.
That thing you are referring to is known as the Academic Progress Report, other wise known as the APR. Something this Hoosier fan is all too familiar with having given up two scholarships as a result of Sampsongate.
Ohio State has already paid the price, and having Offutt leave will not help the current APR standing.
It is my humble opinion that in the future , coaches will be paying even more attention to a recruit's academics, as well as how good of a basketball player he/she is.
Each semester/quarter a student/athlete earn for his school 2 points by remaining in school with a qualifying GPA. Failure to meet the required GPA loses a point for his/her school in whatever primary sport they are participating in. Leaving school loses a point. Leaving early with less than a qualifying GPA, loses a school two points
Conversely, a student/athlete who remains in school with an qualifying GPA earns his/her school two points for each semester/quarter.
The APR score a school attains each year is averaged out over a four year period. Failure to maintain a qualifying APR in any given year results in loss of scholarships. Failure to improve an APR score within that four year period can result in further penalties, such as loss of recruiting dates.
Those schools experiencing a high number of transfers or kids leaving after one year for the NBA are most subject to having their numbers negatively impacted by the APR.
What we have seen at a number of schools who have recruited lock down one and doners heading to the NBA, is that the student/athlete has just managed to get by the first semester/quarter, and then abandoned his academics the second semester/quarter. Thereby leaving the school with a two point hit on their APR score.... one for leaving, and one for leaving in poor academic standing.
And it can happen with a kid who is not going on to the NBA, but has decided to transfer. Indiana had two kids leave the program at the close of last season. One left in good academic standing, and IU suffered only a 1 point hit for him. The other made his mind up long before the end of the season that he was transferring, and let his academics, which were good the first semester, slide. Long story short, IU took a two point hit on this kid. And has set aside a scholarship, expecting to take an additional hit on it's APR score.
In Offut's case,OSU will lose one point. The question is will he be leaving with a qualifying academic APR.
I cannot recall . But I believe the GPA needed not to take a hit if a kid leaves is 2.7
