Would you buy online or at a store ? Walmart, Staples, Office Depot ...

What are the best online sites ? TigerDirect, Newegg ...

I'm looking for a new laptop, something in $500-$700 range. I'm leaning toward HP or Toshiba.

I got an HP last summer for $600. They still might have some back to school specials. Look at their site and customize what you want.

If you only want it for the internet that would be a lot of money to spend if you just want something basic. I bought a netbook for$300, does everything i need it for: music, watching video online, and surfing the web. Some people don't like the small size, but it is light, 8 hour battery life, and cheap. Plus I have a work computer for word, excel, and whatever else.

Office Depot has an HP and a Toshiba for $499, both look good. 15.6" screen, 4GB memory, 320GB hard drive. HP has a AMD Turion dual processor, the Toshiba has Intel i3.

Go to Best Buy and play with what they have.

Then go home and find something similar on newegg.com.

Also, don't waste your time on the Mac. They're overrated.

I've found with laptops you really should play in the store because you'll be really unhappy with some of the keyboards. They all get their components the same place, so for the most part you should be buying largely based on what is comfortable to use (for the price) and to a lesser extent, service rep.

I ALWAYS buy my computers over the phone. Almost all companies (especially Dell and Gateway) give their reps a certain amount of discount they can give per day. When you're done building your own computer through the sales rep, you'll get to the end where you have to decide if you want to buy it. If you sound somewhat disinterested or unsure, they almost always ask "What can I do to get your business TODAY?" That is when you negotiate! I've gotten as much as $250 off a desktop and almost that much off my laptop doing that.

Sounds like someone hasn't used a mac in a long time. As of right now they're the superior product out there. Quibble over the price but thats a different discussion.

I wouldn't bother with Norton or AVG. The Microsoft one isn't too bad. Avast is another free one you can look into.

Also looking for a laptop for my wife. She will be using it mostly for her school work (teaching) by using Microsoft Office. Will also be used mostly for internet. We are looking for the most economical thing we can find that won't be completely worthless in a year. Most of what I have been looking at is in the $400-500 range.

Any thoughts? Best brand? Minimum specs?

What is sad is that I buy computers all day for my work, however they are so high-end that the knowledge I have from that is worthless.

Any help is appreciated.

Can you dolts even read? Macs are out of his price range.

I'd go slickdeals or Newegg. I good friend of mine just got a 13" Sony....don't know anything about the specs. He paid $750 and it's a very nice machine. This coming from a Mac user. I'm not nerdy enough to take a stand on one side. I'm not anti-PC....just anti-Dell. Stay away from that garbage.

Macs are great computers, but they are very expensive for what you get. If you're into aesthetics, then go with the MAC. If you're into anything else, go with a Dell and build it to what you can afford.

Microsoft Security Essentials is the best one out right now. And it's free.

I was messing around with This in Bestbuy the other day and I really liked it. The build quality reminds me a lot of a Macbook Pro and it's only $579.
