Computerworld is reporting that the second iteration of the WiMax 4G technology — known as WiMax 2 or 802.16m — is ready to be finalized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) this November. After approval, the WiMax 2 Forum hopes to see WiMax 2 handsets in the marketplace by the end of 2012. Mohammad Shakouri, the VP of the WiMax Forum, has said that the goal is “to deliver average downlink speeds of more than 100Mbps to users.” The newer, faster WiMax will not saturate areas any better than its predecessor, although it will offer backwards compatibility to the first generation WiMax (802.16e). At it’s current rate, Internet traffic is predicted to double every year from now until 2013. Experts estimate that the world will consume roughly 1.3 million terabytes of data per month… in video alone. Bearing that in mind, it’s good to see the bandwidth threshold of these 4G technologies continue to rise!

If they can get the current wimax built out and more cities and this will be backwards compatiable with current sprint 4g handsets, Sprint might pull ahead of the other carriers if they can keep pumping out new/nice phones!!

Either I'm confused, or that article is misleading. I'm not sure where they get dropping 100Mbps....4G is no faster than LTE and both are supposed to be about 10X faster than 3G, which would be 5-12Mbps.

I don't know, maybe this new network will be much better service (not all the dropped calls) Sprint is infamous for in heavily populated areas. And if they get the IPhone it could be a real shot in the arm. Don't see them surpassing VZW, though, who is rolling out LTE at the end of the year and has a boatload of android phones.

Competition would be a good thing, though, to help keep prices down a bit.

I'm waiting for the day I can ditch the home broadband and just have one internet carrier for both home wifi and cell. Heck, throw in cable over the internet/air for good measure.

I've had Sprint for about 4 or 5 years now and I've NEVER had problems with dropped calls. I'm in and out of Cleveland almost everyday.

Nobody beats Sprints plans either.

It's a new technology for wimax and wimax/4g is data only and not voice.
I would say your confused as long as they aren't blowing smoke out there butts!!!!!!

Ahhhh....did a little quick research.....Seems they are referring to capability, not what will actually be delivered. CURRENT capability is actually about 40Mbps, but only 3-5Mbps is delivered. Yeah, that makes more sense. This news is also 3 months old, and coming from the President of the WiMax organization.

I mean, just basic common sense - 100Mbps is more than twice as fast as what fiber delivers.

Yeah, there's always someone. Most people I know who have had Sprint have had issues. It's the worst rated major cell provider for a reason. It's cheap for a reason. Great that it works for you.

You sound really confused. Also, fiber can deliver much faster than 100Mbps. Verizon, on their FiOS (fiber) network, has tested speeds up to 925Mbps.

I read an article yesterday that said the Verizon fios had been tested at 2.4 gbps downloading and 1.2gbps upload. I'll find the link and post it

Yet, what you as a consumer can purchase is @ 50Mbps, that's the point. There are faster/premium, but that is is the standard available to the masses. Like I said, current WiMax capablility is 40Mbps but what you as a cellular customer are getting is 3-5Mbps.

Such speeds are meaningless to me, but obviously it's effective to people who mistakenly think this would translate to their cell download speeds.

The wireless transfer speeds/standards are not the problem in most cases (unless we are talking about wireless penetration), it is the backhaul cost and bandwidth holding back the end users speed.

You sounded confused when you used the phrase, "4G is no faster than LTE". LTE and WiMAX are 4g technologies. I was just making the statement about fiber networks because you used fiber as a general term. I gave an example of a real world network with actual tested speeds. Those tested speeds are much lower than the theoretical limits.
