Who on here has replaced their windows in their house? My suck and I am thinking about replacing them. They are made by Acorn, a company that went out of business about ten years ago. My builder, Rockford, probably fished them out of the dumpster to save money while building the house.

If you have replaced your windows who did you use?

Who did you get estimates from?

What is the average cost per window, single vs double?

Did you notice a difference in your utility bills after replacing your windows?

Yeah you will see a decrease in your energy bills if your existing windows are as bad as you say.

Double hung windows are more expensive than single hung. How often do you open your windows? If you have air conditioning in your house you could get by with single hung windows.

Saving money from the outset will cost you more money in the long run. Find a local reputable contractor to install the windows. Installing windows needs to be done properly the first time. Buying quality windows is also essential. For all vinyl windows I recommend the Jeld-wen brand. For wood windows either Pella or Andersen.

I think you can still get a tax break from the government if you purchase the right windows. I just replaced mine with Champion. I am very happy with them. The sound of passing cars has decreased and my utility bills have gone down.

We replaced the entire windows in the Back Eating Area of our house total of 12 double hung windows. I when with a double hung vinyl white, the easy cleaning and energy saving was huge.
I replaced old wooden windows.
I have an older guy who I can trust and does a great job. He does great work and is a fix all type of guy. He helped me measure the windows and provide the size and dimensions needed for each window. I took that information and his builder discount to a Wholesale Builder Supplier and got my windows for half price. He picked up the new windows and took out the old and installed the vinyl windows. Over all his labor cost was much, much less that the package deals the window companies give and the windows where the same. Lot of people are out of work …just find that craftsman who needs extra money.

Pella is sooooo overated when it comes to windows. Paying for a name only. The new rage on the market for wood interior is a new composite material that can be stained to match interior trim. The main thing you want to look for is R-Value of the glass...does it have Solar Ban 60/70 glass used...super spacer...argon or krypton gas....and what is it's K value. But the biggest part of replacing the window today is the actual installation of the new windows. You can buy the most expensive window on the market, yet have a crappy install and acheive nothing.

Stay away from Window World and Hallmark for $189 installed....that is one cheap window. Do not buy single hungs either...very cheap!! Send me a PM and I can answer any question you may have.

We had Pella give us an estimate to replace every window in our house. Close to $20k.

I just replace two windows for the baby's room. Simonton, double hung, low E. I can't remember the united inches, be we got them for about $150 a piece from B&T Distributors.

My house was built in 1903 and has nonstandard window sizes and an insane amount of windows. I think my parents had it appraised a while back and the estimate was like >$50000. We were all :O

I've always wondered about the whole "tell them so-and-so sent ya" claim. I hear it on radio ads and tv commercials all the time. I just imagine it ending up like on Seinfeld when George mentions Kramer's name at the optometrists office.

Yeah, ours was built in 1909. Weird window sizes galore.

Always get about 3 estimates if you can. Compare products but also companies. Never, ever sign a contract the evening they come out....especially those that start at 15,000 but say they'll do it for 10,000 by signing right now, then call the sales manager and say they can do it for 8000. You're still over paying by 3000 in most cases.

Those older homes can go either way, but some do have monster sized windows.

We only have one large window. I take it you work for a window company? Or used to, maybe? Know any good places that do work in Cincinnati? We want to start replacing windows in small amounts. Two or three at a time, maybe more depending on our cash flow and the estimates we get.

It appears to by Vinyl Kraft. I've never heard of them but I'll probably give AE a call and schedule someone to come down for an estimate.

Yeah, we have a few really large ones and even the regular ones are probably larger than most in homes built today. Add to it that they are non standard sizes and that my parents would (assuming they get new windows) replace them with the same style glass (I don't know what to call it other than wavy) and you end up with an insane replacement cost.

I just counted in my head and there are something like 52 windows in the house.
