Pretty self-explanatory: what is your favorite U.S. City? For the purposes of this post, exclude any city from your home state (so I won't discuss my thoughts on NYC):

My favorites:

*San Francisco (cue the predictable gay comments here) ... gorgeous city, great restaurants and scene, very unique layout with the hills, the Bay, near Napa and Sonoma

*Seattle ... if it didn't rain so much, I could live here. Great music scene (even now), interesting, rustic downtown with Mount Rainier as part of the backdrop, plus fantastic coffee houses everywhere!

*Denver ... I was surprised with how cool this city is. Very quiet, but they have a street (with no cars) packed with bars and restaurants, and its vicinity to the Rockies is hard beat.

You?

I haven't been out west, so I can't comment on San Diego/San Fran and haven't been to Texas, but:

1. Miami - Just feels like a different world when you are there. Such a cool city with great weather.
2. Chicago - Awesome, awesome city. Would move their tomorrow if given the right opportunity
3. Boston - Cool historical city with a lot of pride

Good thread. I've been fortunate enough to be able to travel to a good number of places and some of my favorites include:

Phoenix-weather is hot but not humid. Beautiful mountains and deserts and a place to golf all year round.

NYC-there's just so much to do there. Some people might think it's too big or crowded but I think it's a pretty awesome city.

Indianapolis-I was very surprised by this city. Downtown is very nice and it just has a nice feel to it.

Key West - how can you not love Key West?

I agree with BAB, my pick would be San Francisco

I'll also add that San Francisco has to be one of the cleanest big cities in the country. Sure, there are some ragged streets in the Tenderloin, but overall, the city is neat, clean and colorful.

Chicago ...I enjoy the city all it culture, events, foods and the little communities outside the city (Lincoln Park, Lakeview as examples). The Lake adds to the summer enjoyment of a beach and water sports, plus the seasonal change is always great. (winter is a bitch in the city) however if you dress for the condition it's good.

Scottsdale, Az and Denver, Co are the same to me... I enjoyed the high class living condition and different culture that have provided some great food, shopping and entertainment. With a short drive time outside the city and you're in a different environment of ruggedness. The weather condition of both cities was not a problem. I can acclimate myself to the weather I’m from Ohio.

I have always wanted to have a retirement home / vacation in South Bar Harbor, Maine but I don’t think that will happen now…

1) New Orleans- Not sure I'd want to live there, but I love visiting. Historical, unique culture, great nightlife & incredible food.
2) Key West
3) Seattle- If I leave Portland it'd probably be for Seattle. I prefer Portland, but for career purposes may need to move up to Seattle at some point.
4) Denver
5) Chicago

From the cities I've visited, and outside of cities I've lived in or cities I'm going to live in (Minneapolis, Boston, Chicago), I'd say my favorites are Seattle, Milwaukee, and San Antonio.

Columbus - Really a great city. Not as cultural or historic as other large metropolises but it has character and the city she loves me

Savannah - old, dark, brooding. It is an isolated area, surrounded by the ocean and swamp, with a ton of history. Would love to go to NOLA as I think it's much the same atmosphere.

NYC - Easily the best out of the big 3......what else needs to be said?

Chicago is my favorite by far. I even love the $10 packs of cigarettes and the homeless people there.

1. Charleston, SC. Wish I still lived there.

For big cities I'd go with Chicago.

Favorite to visit or favorite to live? Chicago is a great place to visit but terrible place to live.

My favorite place to visit is San Antonio, TX.
My favorite place to live is Milwaukee, WI.

I think Cleveland gets a bit of a bad rap. I am dating myself here, but when I was in college (mid 90s), I hit the flats and caught some Indians' games, and I had a good time. I returned to Cleveland on a business trip in 2006, and the city just seemed different to me: kind of dead, bleak. Could have just been an off night, just a very different vibe.

That being said, my buddy lives in Cleveland, and Websurfinbird and I want to visit him and hit Michael Symon's restaurant LOLA.

I was just in Cleveland Saturday and had another great time. Everytime I go to a game or go out there I have a blast. I really do love it. Of course going to sporting events is always fun but I find the nightlife to be good as well. I am from a very small town so it doesn't take much to please me, though (TWSS).

Red Bluff, CA- Quaint little country town in the Northern part of the state. Nestled at the base of Mt. Shasta, it has a beautiful Mountainous landsacape.

Maple Shade, NJ- About 15 mins from Philly and about 2 hours from Atlantic City/Delaware. Has that small town feeling, with the big citys near by.

Brooklyn, MI- If you have never been to the Irish Hills of Michigan, you have to plan a weekend there. Very beautiful surroundings.
